Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives

What are the components of operating a successful small food establishment in a small state?

Who loves to find small "Hole in the Wall" eateries that bring with them good food and a fun atmosphere? This project will explore several small eateries in our local New Hampshire region. We will learn what it takes to run a small food establishment in a more rural setting, what it means when some of those establishments are seasonal only, and how running that business can be both profitable and fun! We will travel around New Hampshire finding good food and in the process learn how to come up with a plan for a unique eatery of your own! At the end of the week we will have established the best menu in town and come up with some recipes for success!

Day 1

Today we went to Gina’s in Bristol New Hampshire where we asked Gina questions about her business. Next, we went to the Red Arrow Diner in Manchester New Hampshire where we learned about why it’s so famous, and who has come here over the years. ~Ben

As you can see in this photo behind Charlie is a wall and collage of photos taken with many famous people, including artists and songwriters like Adam Sandler along side, political leaders, such as Clinton, Obama, and Trump. The diner was located in Manchester, New Hampshire. Called The Red Arrow and to the right of Charlie is Amanda. She is the fifth generation of her family to run the diner, and she was able to stopin and talk with us during this interview for a couple minutes. After we chatted with Amanda for a few, we sat down and ate some chicken tenders, the famous Trump tower burger and also some homemade buffalo mac and cheese. Looking around while eating my food I saw many plaques with award-winning names for the state wide, diner competition. It was endless. Throughout the whole experience, the group enjoyed it, and we would 100% consider going back. Highly recommend. ~CJ

Day 2

Today we went to George’s in Meredith NH for breakfast. Everyone thought the food and atmosphere were great, as well as the service. Next, we went up to North Conway where we split up. Some people went to Cheese Louise, and some people went to get a lobster roll. It was a great experience overall, and was a lot of fun.

For our second day of project week, we visited George's Diner. It has a very classy and warm atmosphere with the food to match it. Steven and I had a great time!!! ~Jayden

On this lovely early spring Tuesday afternoon we cut up to North Conway New Hampshire. Just about an hour north from campus, we came across this wonderful little main street in town that had our favorite diner of the week so far. This was Cheese Louise. Cheese Louise is a humble little a abode with multiple different goat options on the menu. Different cheese options, special sauce, and the best tomato soup. You'll have an experience right when you walk in. You see the spacious landscape, bright lights, classy home vibe, and a greeting with a wonderful smile from one of the employees. Just minutes later a steaming, hot crusty cheese filled sandwich and homemade lemonade sitting in front of you. Our group loved this place, and I hope you try it too. I highly recommend. ~CJ

Day 3

On day 3, we began our day at The Nook Diner in Hillsboro NH, the most traditional and classic looking diner we’ve seen thus far. The pancakes were good! The next stop was a local "dive" in Lebanon NH known as the Marsh Brothers Deli. The sandwiches were huge and the local flare was vibing. The lunch crowd was full of regulars who knew it was the best place in town! We then traveled to Woodstock, Vermont (almost NH!) to get some homemade VT maple ice cream from local dairy farmers and of course, local maple syrup producers, it was delicious! With full stomachs, we walked through the town to finish off the day.

Day 4

During Day 4, we went to Colleen's Kitchen in Ashland, NH. It didn’t have as big of a menu as some of the other diners. There was no steak and eggs or any lunch/dinner items. I had a really good pancake there. My pancakes were huge and it had great chocolate chip flavor. It was pretty good, well cooked and it was not that sweet which is my type. I give this pancake 10/10 because it is the best pancake I ever had. Then we went to Biederman's Deli in Plymouth, NH. The deli specializes in sandwiches/subs; I had two. I had a turkey one and a BBQ chicken. Both were pretty good but I prefer Jersey Mikes more. I gave these subs 7/10. Then we went to M&M Scoops ice cream shop in Plymouth, NH and it was pretty good. The ice cream portions there were big. Overall, I think I had a pretty good experience today. ~Jerry

Day 5

During Day 5, we went to Wyatt’s Family Restaurant in Franklin, New Hampshire. I had really good pancakes there. I ordered a banana flavor one and the chocolate chip flavor. The chocolate chip flavor pancake is better, but both were pretty good and well cooked. I will score these pancakes 9/10. And I also ordered the chicken tender and fries to go. I had the best chicken tender through out these five days and I had a really good experience through out these five days during this project week. I learned something and I ate a lot of food. ~Jerry
