Learn more about his journey and chase for glory down below:
A star is born
Diego Alvarez-Segee joined the Bulldogs as a first-year athlete in 2021, the first season since the COVID-19 pandemic rocked the world. The young minnow came from Bishop Fenwick High School, just outside of his hometown in Saugus, Massachusetts. Alvarez-Segee was a multi-time All-Star and All-State selection in high school, leading to his commitment to join Dean.
Under Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Matt Schairer, Alvarez-Segee took the GNAC by storm. In Dean's first season with the GNAC, Alvarez-Segee produced an impressive 14 goals in just five starts as a freshman. The Bulldogs won all three of their final games of the season, finishing with a 3-2 record (first half cancelled due to COVID-19).
Even though the sample size was small, Alvarez-Segee proved he could conquer on a big stage.
Etching history, one year at a time
In his first full season in 2022, Alvarez-Segee took an even bigger step. The sophomore scored a team-leading 81 points. This also included a team-high 56 goals. During the season, Alvarez-Segee was also tenth in the nation in goals per game (3.73).
His efforts on offense earned him the GNAC Offensive Player of the Year Award and a First Team All-Conference selection.
Junior year brought very similar results for Alvarez-Segee. In 16 starts for the Bulldogs, the attackman scored eight more points and 11 more goals than the previous season. He was also a three-time GNAC Player of the Week honoree and earned his second, First Team All-Conference selection.
Chasing Trophies and Milestones
Heading into his senior season, Alvarez-Segee was just outside the all-time NCAA points leaderboard, culminating 187 points in three seasons. This played a pivotal factor in his senior year. The Bulldogs had been putting together one of their most talented rosters, with sights on another postseason appearance.
With both factors combined, Alvarez-Segee rocketed into the best season of his career. In 19 starts for Dean, including postseason, Avarez-Segee scored a career-high 107 points. This also included a career-high 69 goals. Both of these marks also led the conference, earning him his 3rd First Team All-Conference selection.
In addition to his individual marks, he also helped the Bulldogs earn their first GNAC Championship birth in program history. The team defeated Rivier University in the semi-final round by a final score of 13-11, in which Alvarez-Segee scored seven goals.
adding His Name to the Books
After a historic senior season, Alvarez-Segee returned to Dean for a fifth year. Even while pursuing a second bachelor's degree, the attacker continued to climb the all-time points leaderboard. He scored a season-high six goals against New England College, as well as seven additional points versus Lasell in April.
The Bulldogs would make the GNAC postseason once again, but would sadly fall to Emmanuel College in overtime. However, Alvarez-Segee would secure 12th place, all-time, in NCAA points during this content. His five-point performance would push him past Matt Cannone of Salisbury, Ryan Lee of MIT, and Shawn Lamb of Southern Virginia.
With 374 career points, including program records in both goals and points, Diego Alvarez-Segee cemented himself as one of the greats in Division III lacrosse history.
