Loving Literacy nURSERY, AUTUMN TERM, WEEK 13

I wanted to start this week's blog by highlighting the important work nursery are doing on their writing skills. At first glance, many of our fun play activities may not seem like 'writing' in the traditional sense. We are improving our strength and co-ordination daily through dough disco, scrimbling, and write-dancing, and are now all very excited about mark making. Sometimes we do this formally and sometimes the children follow their own interests. We've seen ambulances, spiders and rainbows (to name a few things) appear in our writing area this week.

Taking time to explore the power of mark making.

This class are very special, in that they love to sit and look at stories. Quite often the adults in the room overhear the children 'reading' (recalling what they remember). Trips to the school library this week have deepened this interest. We have been learning how to choose books that inspire us.

Enjoying looking at books.

Outside has been lots of fun this week. I've watched friendships grow over creating imaginary games and sharing resources.

Being brave and jumping.
Learning how to jump safely.
My favourite quote of the week: 'I'm not playing. I'm making soup'. In the children's eyes every play opportunity is mimicking real life. This teaches them life skills.
Happiness is whizzing around on a bike.
Creating games such as rolling tyres down the hill.

Our maths exploration has been about capacity. You can help to reinforce this at home by using the words 'full', 'empty' and half full'.

Sensory play with the dried legumes.

We've also been learning to recognise numerals. We played a game where we had to match the amount of pompoms to a number.

Mrs Gowland needed our help to create a paper chain to be part of a whole school peace project. We were pretty chuffed with the results.

Finally, a few photos from our independent play this week...
