Frogs

The children in Frogs have had a busy few weeks! We invited our parents to join us for a daily Maths session. We showed them how we completed simple addition work by using the classroom resources to add 2 more. They were very impressed with how we are thinking like mathematicians!

We have also started ‘Learn and Play Together’ sessions. Family and friends come in and support our language skills. They develop and encourage conversations and new vocabulary. The interactions improve communication and boost confidence in expressing ideas.

We love the outdoors and all the children in Early Years have recently visited Weelsby Woods. We explored the wonderful sounds and smells that autumn treasures bring.

Cygnets

Cygnets have been learning the story ‘Rapunzel’ in our English lessons. We have been lucky enough to take part in different workshops this half term. One of them was a storytelling workshop where we learnt about the history of Grimsby. We have been busy practising for our Christmas performance, ‘It’s a Party’. We can’t wait to perform it for the rest of the school and our adults!

Swans

Swans really enjoyed learning the 5 step dance routine for Children in Need this term. They worked with Seastars in Year 5 to complete their dance on the day. This term Year 2 have been working really hard on their Christmas production and we can’t wait for you all to see it next week! The children are amazing!

Sporting Events for SEND pupils

The North East Lincolnshire School Sport Partnership organise a huge range of sporting events during the academic year. These events include some which are specifically for children with special educational needs to ensure all pupils are given an opportunity to represent their schools. In the autumn term, we have entered Panathlon Boccia, Ten Pin and Multi-Sport events. In October, we took two teams to Franklin College to take part in the Boccia competition. All the children represented the academy perfectly and the girls’ team won their group meaning that they have qualified for the Humber Finals in Hull in February.

In November, we took a team to Cleethorpes Bowling Alley. Again, the children all represented the academy really well and finished third in the competition, earning themselves a bronze medal. Within that team, two players, Logan and Max, received gold medals for achieving the joint highest score out of all the competitors! We will be taking a team to Clee Fields later this month for the Multi-Sport competition.

8 KS2 children took part in the Panathlon Multi-Sport trip at Clee Fields. They participated in a range of events including boccia blast, parachute popcorn and flight path. They all performed really well and were crowned North East Lincolnshire champions! They have now qualified for the Humber Finals in the new year. Well done to them all!

Kingfishers

Kingfishers have had an exciting month full of a variety of learning experiences. In English we created a beautiful narrative about the journey of Isaac and his water, linked to our book ‘The Rhythm of the Rain’. Our efforts are now on display outside our classroom for all visitors to read. We have continued to challenge ourselves in maths and have been learning to exchange when adding and subtracting larger numbers together.

Our art unit has allowed us to recreate abstract art inspired by Wassily Kandinsky and we have even been expressing ourselves in our Dance unit in PE. Kingfishers have learned the capoeira and have even been body locking with our Hip Hop moves!

And to top it off, we have even enjoyed our first play in the snow for this year!! We had lots of fun throwing, sliding and rolling it. They playground was full of laughter.

Turtles

Turtles have taken their multiplication skills outside this term. The children have worked so hard on multiplication and division skills and become times table champions! They all received a certificate for their fantastic investigation skills for their 11 times tables and will continue with times table missions throughout the term!

The children worked very hard in their Art lesson to create some beautiful remembrance artwork to show respect to all those who have fallen that we will always remember.

During the afternoons the children have continued to learn about Maps of the World and Europe, Christianity, Computing systems and Abstract Art. Turtles have continued with their learning about the Stone Age and, keep a look out for something very exciting linked to our Stone Age topic coming soon!

Seastars

Seastars have settled in well to their second term in Year 5. In maths we have been learning about multiplication and division. We have looked at prime numbers, square and cube numbers. In English we have continued to read the book, ‘The Song from Somewhere else', where the children have been using their key reading skills as well as working towards writing a newspaper report. In science this term we have been looking at space. This has involved researching about the different planets, and other celestial objects, that are in our solar system. We have continued our learning in history about Ancient Greeks, delving deeper into the origin of the Olympics, as well as how they used to live. In geography we have continued our learning about map reading. The children have been busy in computing making stop motion animations, which they have really enjoyed.

Seastars are looking forward to learning lots more about space and pop art. We are also looking forward to our Christmas crafts afternoon with parents.

Goodbye and Hello

We are sad to say goodbye and good luck to Miss Green at the end of term. Miss Green has been with us for just over a year, in Year 2 last year and in Seastars since September. We would like to thank Miss Green for all her hard work and wish her well for the future. Seastars will be taught by Mrs Ireson and Mrs Backhouse in January, who will be working across Y5 and Y6.

We also say goodbye to Miss Eccles, the teaching assistant in Seastars. We wish her all the best for her next venture. We welcome back Mrs Allen (formerly Miss Lewis) who take over from Miss Eccles in Seastars from January.

Orcas

This term in music, Orcas have been looking at the relationship between music and Pop Art. They used a pop art style portfolio of pictures to explore the concept of theme and variation, using different versions of the same image to investigate ways of playing a rhythm.

In computing this term, Orcas are learning about animation. They designed and made a thaumatrope (a 19th century animation toy) which spins two images on a disc into one picture and a flipbook which shows slight changes in the picture on each page (flicking through them quickly makes the pictures look like they are moving).

On Children In Need Day, Orcas – who had been learning 5 minutes of a dance routine, each day- completed a dance routine and showed it to Kingfishers class.

Blue Whales

Blue Whales have had a fantastic half term so far. We have enjoyed everything from Children in Need, to Anti-Bullying Week and World Kindness Day. Our learning journeys have enabled us to discover about Earth and Space in science and in art we have delved into the world of colour theory through Pop Art.
