Celebrating International Day of Peace: Angell & Rogers

Angell

On Thursday, September 19, Angell Elementary students celebrated International Day of Peace with an assembly. Gale Tosto, 5th grade teacher and organizer of Peace Day, explained the importance of Peace Day before introducing the guest speaker Guy Louis Sferlazza. Mr. Sferlazza shared his perspective on peace and explored methods to create more peace through musical instruments, song and dance. Mr. Sferlazza’s message focused on different breathing, listening and even stretching exercises to develop more internal peace in hopes of using that to express more external peace to others around you. The assembly concluded with Angell Principal Mr. Gigliotti reminding students of their peace affirmations and how peace can start with a simple smile.

Rogers Students Honor and Celebrate Peace Day

Rogers Elementary celebrated the importance and history of International Day of Peace on Thursday, September 19 at their school-wide Peace assembly. Students heard stories of peace, the origins of the peace pole (and why Rogers has one in its courtyard), shared peace together with a high-five, handshake, fist bump or hug, heard poems about peace and sang many peace songs together. The crowd favorite was the song “Nothing More,” by the Alternate Routes. The song includes lyrics like, “To be humble, to be kind, It is the giving of the peace in your mind. To a stranger, to a friend... To give in such a way that has no end… We are how we treat each other and nothing more.”

Berkley High School Hosts Clubs in the Courtyard

On Wednesday, September 18, Berkley High School hosted Clubs in the Courtyard during lunch. The courtyard was filled with students eager to share the clubs they represented with classmates. Berkley High School is home to 35+ clubs for students to join, most of which were on display at Clubs in the Courtyard. Students were curious and excited to discover new interests including the following clubs: Drama, Guitar and Bass, Chess, Female Focused, This is How We Jew It, GSA, Your Vote Matters, World Cultures, Spike Ball, Finance, DECA, Video Game, Robotics, Roblox, Diversity Council and more.

Nurse Rose Visits Angell Kindergarten to Share Hand Washing Tips

On Wednesday, September 18, Nurse Rose visited Angell Kindergarten students to share proper hand washing practices. Nurse Rose first shared the importance of washing your hands followed by a fun video where best practices were reinforced through song and dance. Students then took part in an engaging experiment. Nurse Rose used Glo Germ Gel, which simulates the presence of real germs and illuminates under UV light, showing where actual germs would reside. After washing their hands, students returned to their desks while Nurse Rose visited each of them to see how well they washed away the “germs” under the UV light.

September Calendar Highlights

The Berkley Schools printed calendar highlights heritage months, holidays, days of observances and recognition days. In the Berkley Beat, we’ll highlight these days with more information for community learning to help us achieve the District goal of creating an environment where all staff, students and community members feel a sense of belonging.

Labor Day - September 2

Labor Day is observed on the first Monday in September. On June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday.

According to the Department of Labor, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.

Grandparents Day - September 8

Grandparents day began in 1978 when the United States Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. A presidential proclamation was signed by President Jimmy Carter and thus began the observation of this special holiday. The proclamation stated, “I urge each citizen to pause and to reflect on the influence his grandparents have had in shaping [their] own destiny, and on the legacy bestowed upon our contemporary society by [their] grandparents' generation.”

Patriot Day - September 11

Patriot Day, a holiday observed in the United States on September 11 to commemorate the lives of those who died in the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Virginia and those who perished when the hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania. The holiday also recognizes those who died attempting to rescue people trapped by the attacks.

By a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress on Dec. 18, 2001, September 11 was designated as Patriot Day. The resolution calls for the president of the United States to issue a yearly proclamation requesting that all U.S. flags be flown at half-staff.

There are resources and memorials dedicated to remembering those who lost their lives. Visit the 911 Memorial website the Pentagon Memorial website and the National Park Service website to learn more.

National Hispanic Heritage Month - September 15 - October 15:

September 15th - October 15th is nationally recognized as Hispanic Heritage Month. The month-long celebration highlights the culture, achievements and contributions of Hispanic Americans who enrich our nation and society.

International Day of Peace - September 21

The International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”) is observed around the world each year on September 21.

Established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution, the General Assembly declared this as a day devoted to “commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.”
