Student Staff Shoutout
For this week's "Student Staff Shoutout," Alex Baburov was interviewed about her position as an Aquatics manager at Rutgers Recreation!
How long have you been working at Rec? Why did you decide to apply for a manager position at Aquatics?
I have been working at Rec since my first semester as a freshman at Rutgers, which would make this my fourth year! When I was promoted to Aquatics Supervisor that spring, I started learning what it takes to be a leader, and I quickly realized how much I value being a reliable coworker for others. Through lots of personal growth and so much encouragement from my peers and bosses, I gathered the confidence to apply to become an Aquatics Manager. I am so eager to learn what it takes to be part of a management team, and I was inspired to be the same encouraging figure to the lifeguard staff, as my superiors are to me. What motivated me to apply was my intention to create a strong and positive community at Rutgers Aquatics, and inspire others to pursue excellence.
Has working at Rec helped your professional or personal development? If so, in what way?
Working at Rec has given me plenty of insight on both the personal and professional aspects of my life. I am so grateful for the opportunity to gain experience with being part of a team, coordinating events and trainings, being responsible for a staff of over 100 people, instructing, scheduling, facility maintenance, and so much more. Aside from my professional experience, I am continuously learning, growing, and challenging myself within this position. The experience of working in Aquatics management has allowed me to expand my horizons, and I noticed myself becoming increasingly more confident, sociable, imaginative, and accountable. I value greatly the opportunities Rec has given me, and I strongly believe they will continue to shape me into a better version of myself throughout my time working here.
What advice would you give someone who is thinking about applying for a manager role at Recreation?
My advice to someone who is thinking about applying for a manager role at Recreation would be to channel their strengths and challenge their weaknesses. I think every person has something unique to contribute, and I believe it is incredibly important to bring all the best parts of their personality forward in the work environment. I would advise them to be open-minded and eager to learn, find the confidence to step forward and take initiative, and take as many opportunities that come to them.
Thank you to Alex for all of her hard work and dedication to making Rutgers Recreation a great place!
