Cowbridge Lower School Newsletter 10.01.25

A big welcome back and a Happy New Year to all our families in Lower School. It's been lovely seeing everyone again this week and hearing all our everyone's Christmas break!

Nursery have been recording their thank you letters to Santa. They have been drawing and painting pictures of their favourite Christmas gifts as well well as looking at Winter and signs of frost and ice in their outdoor area.

We have also welcomed some new faces into our Nursery as our new rising 3 pupils have started. A big welcome to our new families!

Reception have been writing thank you letters to Santa for all their gifts. They have been estimating and counting snowflakes, linking into this very frosty weather we have had this week... mae hi's oer! They went for an ice hunt around the school, the ponds are a great place to see ice at this time of year!

Reception have looked at the places in the world that are always cold and used chalk to make snowy pictures and acted out different activities you could do in the snow. Using Welsh, they have been talking about what you need to wear out in the cold.

Year 1 have been writing about their favourite memory from the Christmas break. They have also looked at what a New Year means to some people and written their New Year goals. In their Jigsaw assembly, they talked about what it means to take steps to achieve a goal... then showed their understanding by following steps to make toast! Blasus iawn!

In their Maths lessons, they have been learning about doubling and halving and lots of them beat their best ever scores in their Big Maths tests! Da iawn pawb! They completed some maths investigations linked to number squares and dominoes with great success.

Year 1 have started their new topic of 'Cardiff tales'. They looked at the pictures that their parents had sent in over the holidays of the their visits to Cardiff and have thought of different questions they would like to answer throughout the topic. They have looked a Google Maps and learnt what a 'birds eye view' is and then looked at a 2D map of Cardiff and answered questions.

They decided that they wanted to change their role play area into a travel agent, so they went for a walk to Sam Smith Travel Agents in Cowbridge to hear all about what a travel agent does... and looked at some very beautiful places to go on a holiday in the sunshine! A big thank you to the ladies in Sam Smith who took the time to speak with the children. Diolch yn fawr 😊
