Five tips to learn a new language Joy Ryan

Learning a new language can be difficult and seem impossible. However, using these tips will make learning a language easier.

Learn One Language at a Time

Having to take on multiple languages can be stressful and difficult and can lead you to just quit learning the language all together. When deciding to learn a new language, choose the one you want to learn the most. Just choosing one language to learn at a time allows yourself to have deeper comprehension, better retention of vocabulary and grammar, and helps you understand what works for you. Learning a single language gives you the opportunity to reach a higher proficiency level in that certain language.

If you decide to learn multiple languages at the same time, it can cause confusion with words and grammar rules when the languages are similar. Taking it one language at a time allows yourself to fully understand the basics and retain the information, helping you become more fluent.

Immerse Yourself in the Language

Watch your movies, TV shows, or YouTube videos in the language you want to learn, listen to music or podcasts, play games in the language, or use apps to help you learn. All of these are ways you can immerse yourself in the language. Immersing yourself means you are constantly exposing yourself to the language, which helps reinforce vocabulary and grammar naturally.

It also allows you to remember the words and phrases you learn and how or when to use them in different situations. Getting to really understand the language you improve in listening and pronunciation as well as reduce your reliance on translation, can encourage you to think in the target language.

Learn the Basics: The Alphabet, Pronunciation, and Simple Phrases

Learning the basics of a new language helps you understand the grammatical structures, common vocabulary, and pronunciation. The basics are the framework for understanding more complex structures of the language and can help you form and interpret sentences faster. Teaching yourself the fundamentals of a language, you can start to notice patterns in the language, making it easier to understand how new phrases and new words work.

It also helps ease your work load, as it makes the learning process more manageable. There are many online resources you can use that teach you the basics first, allowing you to fully engage with the language and build up your skill from there.

Set Goals for Yourself

Setting goals for yourself helps you manage your time, provides motivation and focus, and personalizes your learning. Establishing goals helps you understand what you are able to learn in the course of one week, a month, or a year. When you're learning a new language, set short-term and long-term goals for yourself to accomplish.

For example, a short-term goal may be to learn at least 20 new vocabulary words by the end of the week, and a long-term goal may be to be able to hold a conversation with a native speaker for five minutes in one month. Accomplishing these goals along the way determines long-term success, allowing yourself to truly learn and become fluent in the language.

Reflect on Mistakes

Everyone makes mistakes! Don’t worry about if you make a simple mistake or don’t succeed in a certain aspect. Rather, reflect on those mistakes, think about those mistakes, and learn from them. Your misinterpretations are what make you stronger; they help you become eloquent in the language and provide depth of understanding.
