HEAD LICE ADVICE

Head lice and nits are very common in young children and their families. They do not have anything to do with dirty hair and are picked up by head-to-head contact. It is a good idea to check your child's hair regularly to see whether there are any lice present. A consistent approach to detection is the best way to control head lice. The advised method is wet-combing. Please click the links below for a guide to wet-combing and our head lice policy.

TRANSITION SOCIAL STORIES

A lot of children strive on routine and structure. However, routine is not always possible. Sometimes a transition or an unexpected event, no matter how big or small, occurs and changes a routine.

In these instances, a social story for transitions can be crafted to guide children through the process of adjusting to new routines or settings, using simple language and illustrations to depict the change in a positive light.

A transitions social story provides children with a structured narrative that outlines what to expect and how to behave.

Incorporating a transition social story about common upcoming transitions and unexpected events can help prepare children and reduce anxiety in changes in their regular routine. They make it easy for the child to visualise what will happen and provide suggestions on how to respond.

The end of the school year and coming back to school are anticipated changes. This allows for the creation of scenario specific social stories to help prepare children who benefit from advanced notice.

We have created two social stories that your child may benefit from:

1. End of the school year – this social story helps children understand the concept of school ending and the impending holidays. This social story should be shared at the end of term/start of the school holidays. The story should be read with the child regularly (even daily) when the child is calm and can engage with it.

2. Back to school – this social story helps children prepare for coming back to school. This social story should be shared towards the end of the school holidays in preparation for the return in September. Again, this should be shared regularly when the child is calm and able to engage with it.

SPOTLIGHT ON ATTENDANCE 🔦

Please see below the recent attendance data. The overall school attendance has picked up slightly, let's keep that going and end the school year positively. It is fantastic to see that two classes had 100% weeks - well done 5GB and 1HO!

Absence from school all adds up to a lot of lost learning. Please also be aware that a period of five unauthorised days out of school will incur a penalty notice and take note of the changes to penalty notices detailed earlier in the newsletter.

Being in school and having the best attendance possible underpins all the many benefits of school for your child, such as their learning, wellbeing and wider development.

The Department of Education has advice on improving attendance - click here to view.

School Attendance is ‘everyone’s business’.

What an absence means for your child?

At primary school level, where pupils missing up to 14 days of school in key stage two are a quarter less likely to achieve level five or above in reading, writing or maths tests than those with no absence.

If you have any concerns regarding attendance please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Greenley, our Safeguarding and Attendance officer here at Parkside Primary School.

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE

This year's Summer Reading Challenge launches at libraries on Saturday 6th July. This year’s Challenge is all about creativity. From paper weaving to Lego art, bookmark making to puppetry, there’s something for everyone! Children will be able to find new reads linked to their favourite creative arts, and access free activities at the library.

The Summer Reading Challenge important as it helps to prevent the ‘dip’ in reading abilities that many young people experience during their summer holidays while schools are closed, by encouraging reading for pleasure throughout the holidays.

Find out more at the East Riding Libraries webpage here.
