Dynamic Communicator
Clearly and effectively exchange information, ideas, facts, and perspectives with people inside and outside of an organization.
My 2019 TEDxUNC talk follows the story of my life in Venezuela and how that has inspired me to use the media as an outlet for change. I explain what elements make a story leave an impact, and how that can be applied to change the conversation around immigration.
Visionary Researcher
Integrate academic work with community engagement, producing a tangible product that has engaged community constituents and responded to community needs and assets through the process.
My Sophomore year summer, I was awarded a Burch Fellowship from the Honors College at UNC to pursue a self-directed research project. I worked with The Immigrant Story, a nonprofit storytelling organization which specializes in narrating stories about immigrants. Throughout the summer, I documented the stories of Hispanic populations in Portland, OR and Los Angeles, CA. My project consisted of a collection of multimedia stories to be used as qualitative research about immigrant-run small businesses.
Creative Problem Solver
Apply data and emerging technologies to solve problems.
During my Summer 2020 internship with Adobe, my primary project was to tell the story of Hillary Andales, an undergraduate at MIT at the time, who helped articulate the possibilities of creativity and digital storytelling for STEM students.
But, the pandemic shut down the original plan to travel to video interview Hillary. To solve this problem, I had to figure out a way to tell this story at a physical distance. I interviewed and captured Hillary's voice online, but then I taught myself Adobe After Effects to animate and visualize the story, without the help of video B roll -- or A roll either.
Reliable Team Player
Build and maintain collaborative relationships to work effectively toward common goals, while appreciating diverse viewpoints and shared responsibilities. Lead when needed, collaborate constantly.
GateMate is a product created in my ENGL 304 class: Writing in Business. The team challenge was to create a product as well as a promotional package for a Shark-Tank-style competition. Our team prototyped a mobile app for food delivery within airport terminals, which we imagined months before such apps actually emerged (and years before the pandemic). We used Adobe Xd to prototype, InDesign for brand design, and Illustrator to produce handouts for our pitch.
