from the Principal

Welcome back to students and parents for the 2025 school year at South Sydney High School, in particular to those students and families who are new to us. We look forward to working with you in support of your child’s education here at our great school.

I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all students, and in particular, our Year 7 students who have settled in so well to high school life. Most Year 7 students have been at camp last week getting to know their teachers, making new friends and experiencing the exciting activities at the Great Aussie Bush Camp at Tea Gardens.

I would also like to welcome the new families who have joined the South Sydney High School community from different parts of New South Wales, interstate and overseas.

We are proud of the diversity of our student body and the achievement of all our students.

Respect, Inclusion, and Our Shared Values

At South Sydney High School, we are proud of our diverse and inclusive community, where respect, kindness, and understanding are at the heart of everything we do.

There may be times where some in our school community—both students and families—may be feeling vulnerable, concerned, or uncertain. I want to take this opportunity to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to ensuring that every student feels safe, valued, and supported at school.

We encourage open conversations and urge any student who experiences or witnesses inappropriate behavior to report it immediately so we can take appropriate action. Our staff are here to listen, support, and educate, fostering an environment where differences are embraced and everyone feels a sense of belonging.

Our school motto, “Let us be known by our deeds,” reminds us that our actions define who we are. Let us be known for our kindness and for creating a culture where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. We ask for your partnership in reinforcing these values at home, encouraging conversations about acceptance and understanding, and standing together as a community that upholds inclusion and kindness.

Thank you for your ongoing support in making our school a safe and welcoming space for all.

All Better Now by Neal Shusterman

From New York Times bestselling author Neal Shusterman comes a young adult thriller about a world where happiness is contagious but the risks of catching it may be just as dangerous as the cure. From the first words ever spoken to the earliest dictionaries, this book will take you on a journey through the history of the English language. It will also answer some very important questions... Why did the Vikings bring 'glitter' and 'sky' as well as 'war' and 'invasion'? Why is 'being awful' not necessarily a bad thing? Why do we have Shakespeare to thank for 'getting in a pickle'? Get ready, because the story of words is an extraordinary one.

The History of Information written and illustrated by Chris Haughton ; additional text and research by Loonie Park

This book is about how the ways we share information have shaped history and transformed our world. Travel through time from the earliest cave drawings and first written words to the invention of the printing press, the rise of newspapers, and the digital revolution. Walk the Talk: Empowering Students with Life-Changing Lessons

Year 9 students recently had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Walk the Talk event, an engaging and thought-provoking program that explored the importance of healthy relationships and personal boundaries. The event was an eye-opening experience, with students deeply moved by the powerful stories shared. They walked away with invaluable insights that will stay with them for years to come.

A highlight of the day was our exceptional facilitator, Dannielle Miller, CEO of Enlighten Education and Director of Education for Women’s Community Shelter. Dannielle, who was recently featured on ABC Conversations (listen here), brought a wealth of experience and wisdom to the session. Her personal journey, resilience, and commitment to supporting young people made a lasting impact on our students.

Inspired by this experience, our Year 9 students will now be working towards fundraising events to support Bayside Women’s Shelter. Through these initiatives, they aim to raise money and gather essential items to assist women and children in need. This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to take action and make a real difference in their community.

We are incredibly proud of our students for embracing this important cause and look forward to seeing their efforts come to life. Stay tuned for updates on their fundraising activities and how you can get involved!

Careers Hub

On Friday 14 February, five students – Abbygail, Lianne, Talia, Millaine and Christina had the opportunity to attend the Geodis Conference. Here are their thoughts on the experience:

An unforgettable experience at the GEODIS International Sales Conference! 🌍✨ Lianne and Abby had the incredible opportunity to deliver a speech, representing our school alongside Millane, Talia, and Christina. It was so insightful to see the big conversations shaping the future of global business. Grateful for this experience and excited for what’s ahead! 🚀💼 #GEODIS #FutureOfBusiness #InspiringChange @geodisgroup

GEODIS: Paving the Way for a Sustainable Future in Global Logistics

As the world increasingly turns its attention toward sustainability, it’s companies like GEODIS that are leading the charge in creating a greener, more efficient future for global trade. With their extensive expertise in transportation, warehousing, and supply chain solutions, GEODIS isn’t just moving goods; they’re shaping the way industries think about sustainability on a global scale.

We were granted the privileged opportunity to open their sales conference with an innovative way to represent the future of GEODIS. Both me and Lianne learned so much from this experience and the prosperities not only that we took away from being able to present, but the conversations we held with different people who were already experienced in the field. It was also amazing to be able to share this with Millane, Talia and Christina.

We learned so many valuable takeaways from this experience and the day as a whole, including learning about one of the key areas where GEODIS is making a significant impact in optimizing transportation networks. By leveraging advanced technologies, data analytics, and sustainable fuel options, they’re helping to reduce emissions while still ensuring goods are delivered on time. This shift toward smarter, more eco-friendly logistics is vital in the battle against climate change, proving that efficiency and sustainability can go hand in hand.

Beyond the cube itself, our talk was about what trading and global business could look like with future technologies. The integration of AI, sustainable energy solutions, and innovative concepts like osmotic energy will play a pivotal role in shaping the global marketplace of tomorrow. We highlighted how AI could streamline supply chains, make data-driven decisions for sustainability, and optimize trade routes to reduce environmental impact and had the opportunity to sit in on debates where groups would split off and bring up key points for and against the topics given.
