Star Board Term Four Week Three

Principal's Message

Kia Ora Koutou

I wanted to talk Attendance, and Special Leave forms, and Donations for the Fete, and the Fete tomorrow, and STAND, and the Professional learning day we had on Tuesday, and the importance of maintaining high standards of uniform, manners and expectations, and the importance of acceptance of difference- but you know that is what I expect and we expect and what you expect from us. Instead, I am going to share my closing speech from Senior College Prizegiving last night. Now there is a downside to this sharing because I will need to come up with something different when next I deliver this piece of Oratory; heigh-ho I’ll manage something original.

I have taken out some details but put for your consumption my words (some parts I left out last night) to the seniors as they departed for exam leave:

‘I am not going to focus on what has been built, or where money has been spent, or changes to the curriculum, or teacher only days ahead- we have newsletters for that. I am going to address these young ones about them and you and us with hopefully wise words…

To Year 12

As we stand on the threshold of the 2025 academic year, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the unique journey on which you are about to embark—a journey that will not only shape your futures but also reflect the values and legacies left by those who came before you.

The graduates before you, have set a high standard, showcasing resilience, creativity, and a commitment to achieving their best in all their endeavours. They have faced challenges head-on, turning obstacles into opportunities and dreams into reality. I urge you to rise to the occasion. Embrace the legacy they leave behind, and let it inspire you to forge your own path with courage and integrity.

As you step into this pivotal year - year 13, I encourage you to embody the spirit of entrepreneurship. Take calculated risks, explore new ideas, and never shy away from thinking outside the box. The world needs your vision and creativity. Do not just follow in the footsteps of those before you; instead, pave new paths and challenge the status quo.

Let the principles of tikanga guide you in your interactions and decisions. Embrace the values of respect, community, and connection to the land and each other. By honouring these traditions, you will strengthen your ties to one another and to the world around you.

And remember the importance of collaboration. Lean on each other, share ideas, and support one another through this journey. Together, you can achieve far more than you could alone.

As you prepare for the challenges ahead, keep your Anglican values close to your heart. Integrity, compassion, and a commitment to service will serve as your compass. Strive to make a positive impact, not only in your own lives but in the lives of those around you.

2025 is your turn to carry that torch.

To the Class of 2024…Year 13…

As we gather here to mark this significant moment, it is hard not to feel a mix of emotions. Today is a day of farewells—a farewell to the familiar halls, to late-night study sessions, to laughter shared with friends, and to the countless memories made together. You have experienced many “lasts” during your time here, and as you prepare to step into the next chapter, you will find yourself surrounded by countless “firsts.”

Let’s talk the new Firsts…

The first time you venture into the unknown, the first day of your new journey, and yes, even the first time you navigate adulthood—whatever that means! Each first will be a chance for growth and discovery. Embrace these moments with open arms and an open heart.

Do not forget your BFF - Christ …

As you step into this new world, remember to nurture your relationship with Christ. Let your faith be your compass. In times of uncertainty or joy, seek guidance and comfort in that connection. It will sustain you through life’s ups and downs.

Meet people…

Yes - Cast your net wide. Meet new people, explore diverse perspectives, and allow those connections to enrich your life. You never know who might become a lifelong friend or mentor—someone who can help you see the world through a different lens.

Be Brave …

Be really brave …And get outside your comfort zone! Growth happens at the edge of familiarity. Whether it is joining a new club, trying out for a team, or simply striking up a conversation with someone new, do not shy away from those opportunities. Each experience will help shape who you are.

Be an Uplifter …

As you rise, lift others along the way. Be that person who spreads kindness and encouragement. When you help others shine, you will find your own light shines even brighter. Remember, true strength is measured not by how high you rise alone but by how many you uplift along the way.

Fail Forward. Learn Always …

Do not fear failure. It is not the opposite of success; it is part of it. Every misstep is a lesson waiting to be learned. Embrace your failures and let them guide you. With every stumble, you are one step closer to understanding your path.

Embrace Endless Curiosity …

Commit to lifelong learning. The world is an ever-changing tapestry of knowledge and experiences. Stay curious, keep asking questions, and seek out new ways to grow. Each moment spent learning adds depth and richness to your life.

Keep Your Vision Clear …

And Always maintain perspective. Life will have its highs and lows but remember that each moment is just a part of your journey. Celebrate the victories, and when challenges arise, keep them in context. They are just stepping stones toward your future.

Be Authentically You …

Know yourselves. In the whirlwind of change, stay grounded in your values and passions. Trust your instincts and remain true to who you are. Authenticity is your greatest strength, and the world needs your unique voice.

Own Your Online Presence …

And as you navigate this digital age, remember that social media is merely a tool. Use it wisely and thoughtfully. It can connect and inspire, but do not let it define you. Your worth extends far beyond likes and shares.

Be Grateful for Guidance …

So take a moment to express profound gratitude. To the parents and guardians who have invested their love, time, and energy into shaping who you are today— say thank you. Do not bite …. but Hold the hand that fed you. And phone them sometimes, …even when you don’t need money.

And to the school, the teachers, and staff who have guided you through this chapter, their impact will resonate long after today. We know you are grateful … so let them know

As we close this event, I urge you to step boldly into your future. In this ever-changing world, where business and agriculture intersect with innovation and education, you have a unique opportunity to blend tradition with forward-thinking. Whether you aspire to be business leaders, innovative entrepreneurs, or guardians of our land as farmers, remember that your choices today will shape not only your future but also the communities you will serve.

Cherish your memories, embrace the firsts ahead, and carry the lessons you have learned with you. The world awaits your brilliance.

Congratulations Class of 2024 …

To all students- enjoy those exams … Back yourself and be yourself…Be your best self

Go forth and shine’- here endeth my speech last night.

Have a great and safe weekend.

Boarding Note

It is that time once again when our senior students have officially finished their classes for the year and the examination period is about to begin. As you can imagine there is a great deal of excitement in boarding with the thought that summer holidays are not far away, although it is obvious study and exam preparation are the immediate focus.

Thank you to all Year 11-13 boarders for indicating when you will be in boarding over the next five weeks as this allows us to cater accordingly during the exams. If there are any last minute changes to boarding nights, please contact me directly to see how we can best accommodate your needs.

Reminders -

  • Orah passes are still required by all boarders, so we know who to expect in boarding. If Year 11-13 boarders are absent from boarding due to exam leave, please indicate this on your Orah pass.
  • The Boarder’s Christmas Dinner is to be held on Thursday 5th December at 6pm. The expectation is that all boarders will attend this dinner. Please note that tidy dress is required. Thank you.
  • Both boarding houses are now open until the last day of school which is Saturday 7th December.

I hope you enjoy the weekend and if you are attending the Rathkeale Fete on Saturday, make sure you pop into the Friends of St Matthew’s tent. They would love to see you.

Take care and best wishes to all for exams.

The annual morning tea for the Student Librarians was held on Wednesday to thank them for doing Library duties at Interval and Lunch times during the year. This voluntary service they give the school community is appreciated. We also said farewell to the Year 11 Librarians who will be at Senior College next year.
