Dear Families, Friends, Students and Staff.
A very warm welcome to this edition of the newsletter. I hope this finds you well, if a little damp! The recent weather has certainly tested our resilience, but on the bright side we have had some fantastic events taking place this week in school. I was particularly proud to witness the incredible talent and ingenuity on display at our recent Business and Enterprise Day. It was truly inspiring to see our students step into the boardroom and showcase their skills in problem-solving, teamwork, and innovation. Their products were incredibly impressive, and it's clear that we have some future business leaders in our midst!
Inside this week's newsletter, you'll find more details about the Business and Enterprise Day, along with other day to day news and updates from across the school. I hope you enjoy reading about all the exciting things that have been happening.

SATRO Business and Enterprise day
Well, having seen and experienced the SATRO Business and Enterprise day here at Canbury I’m not sure that Sir Alan Sugar needed to bother with this latest series of the apprentice! They were tasked with creating a product from scratch and assigning roles that included finance mangers, HR, Project Managers and of course Managing Directors. The skills of marketing, artistic ability, negotiation, teamwork, management and leadership here on display were just outstanding, and I would have hired all of them if that was the task! The students worked in teams of 7 or 8, from different year groups and not necessarily with their friendship group - not only did they cope with this - they excelled!
We saw our students buying materials from the shop, negotiating with the sales team, moving their money into savings accounts to gain higher interest rates and generally showing us what they were all capable of in the world of work - and let me reassure you that they are going to do just fine!! I hope that the pictures allow you a window into what a wonderful day this was, but it was the conversations between the team from Legal and General and our students that were the highlights for me, and you’ll just have to take my word for it that I would think carefully before entering into a boardroom or negotiation with any of our students!! They all deserve huge congratulations for their resilience, perseverance and performance on this day - they were fab! - Miss Buchanan
Well done Lexi!
We have been told that Lexi in Year 8 had been nominated by her Guide Leaders for the Jack Petchey Achievement Award, and they've just heard that it was successful. She was selected for all the progress she's made, and for helping others and being kind, and has been awarded £300 to organise an event for her Guide unit. How amazing! We now have two Canbury students to have been given this award, both Lexi and Flora in Year 13.
Tag Rugby
Year 9 students were showing off their Tag Rugby passing prowess on the playground today! Mrs. Rich is keeping a close eye on their progress and can't wait for the big game.
Animal Art
Have a look at the fantastic artwork that Year 9 have been busy creating this week in our art department. They have been researching the ornate biomechanical artist Ben Kowk and created their own zentangle patterned animals. Fantastic work this week, well done everyone.
Making waves in the lab
Mr. Rush has been introducing Year 7 to the fascinating world of sound in science, and Tuesday's lesson was a splash hit! Students dived into the physics of waves, using slinkies to visualize their movement and water baths to see them in action.
Public Exam Results
Our Year 10, 11 and 6th form students have been working hard recently in preparation for their Functional Skills exams. As such, we are delighted to report that Rory, Francesca and Fin have all passed their Functional Skills Maths exam and Annie, Logan, Ethan and Reenie have all received passes in their Level 2 Writing exam. Huge congratulations to them all. What a great demonstration of our school value of Achieving.
Assembly - ‘Know Yourself, Grow Yourself'
This week's assembly, led by Miss Chorazyczewska, introduced the theme for Children's Mental Health Week. We also learned about the "Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy" (Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity), a major annual Polish charity event. We heard about its founder, Jurek Owsiak, and his passion for joy, community, and making a difference. Next week, we will be exploring self-curiosity and identify what truly matters to us, empowering us all to achieve great things.
Meet the Staff Member
We're thrilled to welcome some new faces to the Canbury team this term. This week, we're delighted to introduce Mrs Tank, our new Art and Photography teacher. Keep an eye out for introductions to other new staff members in upcoming newsletters.
What inspired you to become an educator?
I believe everyone has a creative spark and this can be discovered within a warm and positive learning environment. I still remember my teachers at school, they left a lasting impression on me and made a difference. A good teacher that understands students and supports them can help shape their future.
What is your favourite thing about working with students?
Inspiring them on their creative journey is my favourite part, as well as teaching them new skills and techniques, especially students who think they can't do it or aren’t ‘good’ enough - that's a real challenge for me. When they realise they enjoy an aspect of art and they see how much they have progressed, it's rewarding to see their confidence build up.
What is the most interesting place you've ever travelled to?
When I went to Bali 14 years ago.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
I would love to time travel! To go back in the past and the future and see if I can change or influence situations and people.
What is your go-to karaoke song?
Holiday by Madonna.

Rory Yr11
Recently Rory was tasked with writing a short article entitled 'My Interests'. Here are a few excepts from this:
Tornadoes Swimming Club
Tornadoes Swimming Club is a swimming club for people with special needs at Teddington pool. It is run by a swimming teacher called Wendy and teenagers that help Wendy to assist the participants.
They make the lessons like ‘Olympic swimming’. I did Tornadoes from 2022 to 2023, and I really enjoyed it, because this club made me put myself out of my comfort zone and made me feel like an Olympic swimmer!
It involves competitions, where each swimmer has to do as many lengths as they can to win silver, bronze and gold certificates and medals. The skills that I had to learn were turn taking, swim slowly at the beginning, so I don’t get tired, swimming next to the swimming pool lane net and learning life-saving skills with RLSS UK Rescue.
Fantastic work, Rory, well done for pushing yourself outside your comfort zone to try new experiences.
