This term is absolutely flying by and we are already at the point of sharing the end of year events coming up over the next month. This newsletter has lots of important reminders, so please mark these dates down in your calendar.

Important Upcoming Dates:

  • Tuesday 21st November - Zoo Trip
  • Wednesday 22nd November - Photo Day
  • Monday 27th November - Fill the Blues Bus collection closes
  • Wednesday 6th December - Community Christmas Picnic
  • Monday 11th December - Dawn Blessing of new Buildings
  • Monday 18th December - Last day of school
  • Wednesday 31st January - Open Day
  • Thursday 1st February - Normal classes begin

Council compliance for the construction project is not expected to come through until mid December now, so we have had to finally accept that we will not be in our new buildings this year. This will be particularly disappointing news for the families of our two year 6 students.

This means that our Community Christmas Picnic will happen in our temporary space on December 6th. This event will be followed the next Monday with a Dawn blessing (5:30am) on December 11th. Families are welcome to join staff, the Board and representatives of Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara in a ceremony to bless the main buildings of our school. An invitation with more information will be sent out to all families in the next week.

Our final school day for the year will now be Monday 18th December. This is to enable the staff and moving company to shift our furniture and resources from the temporary buildings up into the main buildings on the 19th and 20th of December. This means that we can get the spaces set up over the summer break for an exciting start to 2024 in our new buildings.

2024 will start with an Open Day on Wednesday 31st January. This day will allow students and families to fully explore our new school buildings and there will be a booking system for families to sit down with their teacher for the year and set Term 1 Learning Goals.

We are looking forward to our trip to Auckland Zoo next Tuesday. Thanks to all those who have completed the permission form on Hero.

This is an all weather trip. Students will need to wear suitable walking shoes (please no jandals), rain jacket, and hat. Students will need to have their lunches and water bottles in their bags. Please ensure there are no unnecessary items in their bags as students will need to carry them for extended periods of the day.

To cover transportation costs, the fee for the trip is $20.82 per child. On this occasion, this will be payable through the school's bank account: 12-3107-0083815-00. Reference: your family name

Next Wednesday, November 22nd will be School Photo Day at Nukumea. There will be individual, class, and sibling photos taken. A variety of online order options for purchase will be made available.

Students should plan to come to school in their school uniform as normal. We will endeavour to take all photos outside under natural light.

For this reason, we will have Thursday, November 23rd as a saver day.

Our end of year picnic and celebration isn't too far away! If you haven't already, please mark your calendar for Wednesday, December 6 from 5-7pm at the school. At this stage, we plan on being at the temporary site with possible access to the reserve at Crozier place. We are looking forward to sharing performances, singing some Christmas carols, and enjoying some community connections with parents and caregivers. Please remember to bring a picnic. There will be water available on site.

Did you know we have a page on Hero where you can share updates from home? It's called Nukumea Whānau Connect and it's a great opportunity for you and your child to share back with school anything special they've done or any extension of learning they may do at home. It's a really awesome way to make connections to our value of Turangawaewae, building a sense of place and identity.

This morning I took a walk through the classrooms as literacy was happening. In those short walkthroughs, I got to see the whole progression from letter formation to phonics digraphs, on to word formation, writing paragraphs and reading books. Every one of our learners were engaged in their literacy learning whether they were in 1 on 1 lessons, small groups or independent practice. Ka pai everyone!

Nukumea Primary School are supporting the 'Fill the Blues Bus' initiative with other local primary schools. We have a box set up in the office for students to drop in their unwrapped gifts. These will be collected on Monday 27th November.

The Blues rugby team believe every child deserves a present under their Christmas Tree. After two successful years, this festive season we have again partnered with The Salvation Army to bring our ‘Fill the Blues Bus’ Christmas appeal to life this December. If you are in a position to give this Christmas we encourage you to drop off your unwrapped presents to the Nukumea Primary School office. Once the collection is closed off (Monday 27th November), it will be collected and taken to our nearest community collection point, Orewa Primary School.

Have a great week and we look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events.
