Welcome to the final newsletter for 2023! We have had a wonderful first year at Nukumea Primary School and it was incredibly special to start this last full week of the year by blessing our new buildings. They are beautiful and we are really looking forward to learning in them next year. Thanks to all who came along (very early) on Monday morning to this special occasion. For those who were unable to make the event, please have a look at the photos that have been shared on our Facebook page.

Our two Year 6 students Dzhamil and Allison are leaving Nukumea next week for their next school adventure as big Year 7 students. This morning they started their end of Primary School celebrations with breakfast with Mr Mouldey up in the new school buildings. They were the first people to eat in the new staffroom! We wish these two all the best and will miss having them at Nukumea next year.

2024 Classes

Our class structure for 2024 is very similar to what we've had in our temporary spaces. The main change is the class names. These names were discussed with students and reflect the nature of our buildings; the awa (river) downstairs and the ngahere (bush) upstairs. We will have three classes for 2024, which are as follows;

Inanga (whitebait) - this class will be for our new entrant students and will be established as a transition space between early childhood and school. All students will do at least 10 weeks in this space, although some will stay longer depending on their readiness to join our Year 1-3 classroom. Inanga will be downstairs in Kauri block, down the far end (opposite the playground). The teacher in this space is Caroline Smeed, however students in this space will join and collaborate with our Year 1-3 students and teachers.

Kōkopu (freshwater fish) - this class is for our Year 1-3 students. The teachers are Kate Thompson and Samantha Mottram. Kōkopu will be downstairs in Kauri block, down the end closest to the office.

Korimako (bellbird) - this class is for our Year 4-6 students. The teachers are Clare Fielding and Lisa Everett. Korimako will be upstairs in Kauri block, in the end closest to the staffroom.

In mid January, bookings will be open in Hero for you to make a time to meet with your child's whānau teacher on our open day (Wednesday 31st January from 1pm - 5pm). This is an opportunity for you and your child to meet and share any aspirations and information about yourselves for the coming year. When you book, you just need to book for your child's classroom. Inanga (if starting school for the first time OR it has been signalled to you your child will be starting in this space); Kōkopu if your child is in Year 1, 2 or 3; and Korimako if your child is in Year 4, 5 or 6.
