Our Intent at Swinton Queen
At Swinton Queen, we provide high-quality exposure to different languages in order to enhance our student's 'Culture Capital', as they become more aware of different cultures, people and points of view.
Through the use of French, we aim to broaden our children's cultural language and develop their linguistic skills by underpinning the curriculum into the following areas:
Speaking and Listening
Reading and Writing
Songs, Stories and Rhymes
Grammar
Alongside this, phonetic knowledge of the French language is crucial. The choice of vocabulary ensures exposure to all the key phonetic sounds, with the ability to build sentences, using grammatical knowledge, over the course of KS2.
Our Implementation at Swinton Queen
To ensure that the aims of the Language Programme of Study for KS2 are met, we employ The Mixed Age French Scheme by Cave Languages.
Lessons are designed to be progressive and build on prior learning, moving from word to sentence level over the course of KS2 using a 2 year rolling cycle.
Formative assessment in each lesson informs the planning and teaching of subsequent lessons. The lesson plans indicate which activity is an opportunity to assess progress and is linked to the KS2 targets.
SEND Offer
French lessons lend themselves particularly well to SEN-friendly teaching strategies, such as the use of repetition and adopting a multisensory approach – for example, learning the alphabet and counting in a foreign language are both activities that can make great use of music and singing, a fun classroom activity that can boost confidence and memory. From flashcards and whiteboards to musical instruments, there are a range of audio, visual, and even kinesthetic teaching styles that lend themselves to MFL teaching, thus boosting SEN students’ chances of success and more importantly, enjoyment!
