I learned a lot about the pen tool and illustrator basics while making this piece. I got to work with gradients, creating shapes, and focusing on composition with the rule of thirds. I wanted to capture a whimsical and youthful feeling with a fun story and imagery. I’m really happy with how it turned out, especially for the first time ever using illustrator. I hope my audience will find some joy when they see this piece, and that it brightens their day a bit.
In this work, I created a proposed logo for a snowboarding company. I really wanted to create a mascot or character for this company, as I feel more comfortable making illustrative work and I think mascots are a great way for consumers to connect with a company, especially with a younger target audience. I learned more about the basics of illustrator, and got to work on simplicity and shape language. I also worked on creating a cohesive palette with color and font, and creating a brand. I really enjoyed making this art and I like the final product a lot.
For this project, I was inspired by the logo and character I created for Xtreme Latitude, the snowboarding company. I don’t personally snowboard, but I wanted to create a design that I would like on a board. I used pastel pinks and blues, cherry blossoms, and the raccoon from the logo I designed. I learned about clipping masks, symbol sprayer, and pattern brushes. I really enjoyed working on this piece, and I think the color palette works well.
I learned how to make patterns in illustrator during this project. I liked playing around with different pattern layouts and types, and seeing the final product in 3d form was very fun. I used my love of cats, and spooky things to create three unique cat faces inspired by skeletons, jack-o-lanterns, and frankenstein. If I could go back, I would want to make the pattern more dynamic and interesting, having the cats interact with each other, or simply have more movement. However, I really liked the idea and the process of creating this piece.
I liked this project a lot because it allowed me to apply all the skills I learned throughout the semester into something more aligned with my personal style. I used clipping masks, patterns, shape building tools, and I learned how to create symmetrical images in illustrator. I was inspired by the limited color palette present in Adam G’s “messy mod” style, and his use of shape and lines. I wanted to take elements from that style and use them to create a piece in my illustrative style. I like the shapes in this piece and the character created here. I hope to inspire others in the same way I was inspired with my own art.
