Dinosaur Discoveries Nursery, spring term, week 9

The children had a treat this week when we visited 'the big yard' for the first time. They loved taking on the larger scale physical challenges.

Climbing, swinging and sliding.

When we returned later in the week, the challenge was to hunt for further dinosaur clues. You'll never believe it... we found a dinosaur skeleton!

Finding something strange.
We found lots of bones.
Realising that they were NOT dog treats and that the bones came together like a jigsaw was a lightbulb moment.
It took some persistence to find them all.
Examining how the bones looked different to each other in size and length.

Back in class, Miss Shaw has been working closely with nursery, particularly with their maths focus on length.

Miss Shaw is by far the tallest.
Comparing the length of different dinosaur footprints using cubes.

Our writing practice continues as we approach a very exciting point in the children's development. After Easter we are beginning our Read Write Inc journey, formally learning letters and sounds. I don't know who is more excited, me or the kids!

Finger strengthening exercises.
Learning the correct sitting position and pen grip for writing.
Checking we can keep symbols the same shape and size, moving from left to right across a page.
It takes a lot of concentration.
And some determination.
The children feel proud of their writing.

This week we have spotted lots of children applying their new maths skills through their play.

Comparing shape, size and colour. Recognising and writing numbers.

In our art area there has been lots of experimental collage work.

Creative messy play.

Lastly, I wanted to show a few other lovely moments from the week. The play dough table has been a popular place for talking with friends whilst playing. The children have enjoyed simple games on the PC, imaginative role play, and observational drawing of dinosaurs.

Fun with friends at school.
