Students today have many ways to access the information necessary to be successful in college. Some of the resources are created by faculty, and some are in textbooks and created by textbook publishers. Video is a powerful medium that explains concepts and ideas in a manner different from static text and images. Today, our faculty at Bothell are exploring the various ways of making useful and engaging videos. One of them is the "Learning Glass."
WHAT DO FACULTY SAY?
“I have used Learning Glass in the past to present a few introductory physics lectures. Learning Glass is a great tool to augment how content is delivered to the students. What makes it different from a chalkboard or a white board is, the instructor is facing the classroom while writing. I am planning to create a few more lectures using the Learning Glass for other courses I will be teaching at UW Bothell.” Subramanian Ramachandran
“Learning Glass videos look great and are a wonderfully durable resource for faculty and students. In physics, we’ve created a library of them, with different faculty presenting different concepts. It’s much better than a recorded zoom lecture because it’s more beautiful; the simple, elegant presentation gives the videos a unified look, while also giving students access to a variety of instructor styles.” Rachel Scherr
“Learning Glass is a great way to create mini-lectures for subjects that students might want to review, revisit, or reference often. The setup is easy to use and the videos look and sound excellent. All I had to do was schedule an appointment and show up to record; Marc took care of the rest.” Ansel Neunzert
“I am using Learning Glass videos to walk students through calculations where they often make mistakes. Marc helped me set the videos up so students can read the question, see the table they will build, then see me do the calculation, all on one screen.” Helen Andrews
WANT TO GET STARTED?
The Bothell campus has a Learning Glass that is available for any faculty to use. The faculty do the explaining, and our team makes the video.

BEYOND INSPIRED
Some faculty were so inspired by using the UW Bothell Learning Glass that they made one in their home offices! Faculty Colin Danby is one of them and he noted, "Using a Learning Glass is so much more natural than just reading a script at a camera. I can be in the same space with my diagrams and graphs. I can point, gesture through, and modify what I draw."
