In Nusfjord, guests will find a surprising refuge of warmth and hospitality in the wild.

Underscoring the fact that Nusfjord is one of the most distinctive experiences in the world, it is comprised of 26,000 acres - an area nearly twice the size of Manhattan – offering a playground of activities to stretch even the wildest of imaginations. Despite the vastness, community means a great deal to Nusfjord where there remains 20 full-time residents living in the village, many of whom work for the property in various capacities, in many cases offering a level of expertise and knowledge on the region that would otherwise be difficult to find.

Select from a wide variety of fishing excursions by sea or freshwater, or opt for pulling up crab pots and later enjoying the catch in the restaurant. By RIB, explore caves and abandoned fishing villages, join a sea eagle safari and marvel at the strength and size of the majestic bird. From snowshoeing to mountaineering, kayaking, backpacking and much more, Nusfjord offers guests unparalleled opportunities of exploration.

Fisherman's Cabins

Sleep in the Wild - A colorful collection of 25 authentic fisherman’s cabins or ‘rorbu’ create one of the most distinctive accommodations and experiences in the world. Set within the village or along the waterfront, each has been lovingly refurbished to attend to the needs of today’s modern traveler, yet they maintain a rustic quality embracing their rich heritage. Soak in a steaming hot shower, enjoy a warm beverage under cosy wool blankets in the living area, or watch the ever-changing Lofoten weather from the waterfront terrace.

In the evening after dinner, guests will stroll through the village under the starry sky or midnight sun as they return to their cottage to rest and rejuvenate for the next day of activities.

Heritage at Every Turn

There is no doubt the spirit of the hardened fishermen who set out to sea still lives on in the the village. You’ll find the heritage at every turn and in the buildings that make up the Nusfjord experience.

A choice of dining options include Landhandleriet Café, the former office of the hamlet owner himself, Mr. Dahl. The old general store dates back to 1907 and has kept its original interior, taking you back in time from the moment you enter. Here you can also find a variety of provisions, clothing, snacks and momentos.

Begin your day within the intimate, wooden walls of Restaurant Karoline for an exquisite buffet breakfast designed to provide fuel for the day's activities. In the evening, guests can dine in a refined experience with a weathered ocean view. The menu reflects the rich traditions of Nordic cooking and the bountiful harvests of the local saltwater realms.

Oriana Tavern originally functioned as a food and whiskey store and now serves pizza. Here guests can gather for an ‘aftersea’ experience in the candlelit cave, or they can imbibe in a light aperitif.

Where Heritage, Art and Culture Meet

Nusfjord's OUTDOOR SPA is literally a work of art, built by recent graduates from the Oslo School of Architecture and Design. The elegant installation features a traditional wood-fired hot tub, sauna, and outdoor shower. Here you can breathe in the wild.

Sink into the nurturing spring water and recharge your batteries with the amazing sea view. The star-studded sky forms the roof over your wellness experience, while during winter you may spy the aurora borealis, as it sweeps across the sky. Guests can choose from a variety of body and massage treatments, seaweed and salt scrubs, or take aroma infused saunas. Enjoy the sensations of plunging into the crystal clear sea or comforting hot tub.

In the heart of Nusfjord is Salteriet, a former salt house where fish roe was preserved and stored. This salt house building has since been transformed into an ART GALLERY displayed over two floors. On the ground floor, curated exhibitions of art in all genres are shown. On the second floor you can experience exhibitions in collaboration with QSPA (The Queen Sonja Print Award).

Ownership

The Krefting family’s company, Carucel Eiendom in Oslo, acquired the historic village of Nusfjord Arctic Resort with the intention to maintain its rich heritage and proud culture, yet they have breathed new life into it and opened it up for a world of modern travelers. “The family fell in love with the place and made a considerable investment with the goal to preserve and communicate the fishing village's history while offering the highest level of comfort and service. For us it’s about operating sustainably,” says Caroline Krefting, COO of Carucel. “The most important thing is that the overall experience is a total immersion in the greatness of nature.”

Improvements on the immediate horizon continue with the addition of two new luxury accommodations opening soon. Additionally, highly regarded chef Björn Svensson from Oslo has been consulting to assist Nusfjord in opening a new restaurant on the waterfront and to refresh other menus.
