Class of 1960 School Reunion

It was a pleasure to join a group of MHS alumni at Ocean Shores Country Club, on Sunday afternoon, where I was invited to attend a Mullumbimby High reunion for graduates of the 1960s. It was a wonderful opportunity for me to meet former students as well as some former teachers, including the mathematics teacher who taught our own Mrs Ellen Thompson. It was just magic to hear about the Mullumbimby of the past when students travelled by train from Byron Bay, apparently getting up to a bit of mischief along the way. There was also a strong sense of community and shining pride in being from Mullumbimby High. It was really joyful, especially the singalong to the school song created in 1963 (mostly) by 4th year student Sally Riddlesworth and accredited to the 4th year students of 1963. I spoke with one graduate of ‘64 who had gone on to become an engineer. He shared that he gets quite emotional about his old school and had a huge amount of respect for his principal, Mr John Pearce who he described as firm but fair. I was so proud to share with the folks what a great team of educators and support staff we currently have at MHS and the wonderful young people that are following in their footsteps. Everyone was very curious about the school now and how things have changed since their day. I was very proud to be able to share with them what a fantastic staff we have now, truly committed to ensuring student success and also that so many of our students are passionate activicts for change in social justice and environmental issues.

Acknowledgement of IDAHOBIT Day

IDAHOBIT Day was acknowledged today at MHS with students going uniform free to raise awareness for the cause of anti-discrimination. IDAHOBIT day is the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia and is acknowledged worldwide on the 17th of May. It is a day to raise awareness, educate against fear and combat discrimination against LGBTQIA+ individuals. Our aim here at Mullumbimby High School is to let all our students know that they belong and that there are allies who support them here at school.

Socials this week for connections

Thursday is a big day for Year 8 with their RIOT Day followed by Movie Night. We will also welcome our inclusive Education families for our BBQ on that afternoon. These activities are all about making connections and ensuring that everyone knows what supports are available to students at school.

Student Survey

In Term 2, we are offering our students the opportunity to participate in the NSW Public Schools Student Survey. The survey gives students the chance to share their thoughts and feelings about life at school, including questions about their engagement, learning experiences and wellbeing at school.

Hearing directly from our students will help us understand what’s working well and where improvements can be made to our school. The survey is confidential, takes around 10 to 15 minutes to complete, and will be conducted online during school hours.

Participation is voluntary. If you prefer your child not to participate, please complete the opt-out consent form, which was sent home a week ago (Check your emails for Student Survey), and return it to the school. Further information about the survey is available at https://education.nsw.gov.au/npss

Sensitive Topics: a message to parents and caregivers

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) is one of the key learning areas for students in Year 7 to 10. Our school’s PDHPE program aims to provide opportunities for students to learn about, and practise ways of, adopting and maintaining a healthy, productive and active life. It also involves students learning through movement experiences that are both challenging and enjoyable, and improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence in a variety of contexts. It promotes the value of physical activity in their lives.

Our school’s PDHPE program provides the opportunity for students to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health and wellbeing of themselves and others, now and in the future. These issues include physical activity, mental health, drug use, road safety, sexuality and sexual health, nutrition, respectful relationships, personal safety, diversity, gender roles and discrimination.

Some of the content of the program deals with sensitive issues. The school recognises this by teaching about these issues within the context of a developmentally appropriate program and by providing information to you about the program.

The PDHPE program aims to encourage students to make informed decisions about their lifestyle taking into account the values of the family, culture and religion to which they belong. The school program will be implemented in a manner that supports the role of parents and caregivers and reflects the ethos of the school community.

An overview of some of the content of the PDHPE program that may be considered sensitive is provided below.

Should you wish to discuss any aspect of the course or would like more information, please contact Lachlan McKenzie (HT PDHPE) on 6684 2600 at the school.
