Preparing for Gethenain Ice
Below freezing temperature all year long. Including Snow, Blizzards, Ice fog, Glacier, and Avalanches. Due to this make sure to travel during low winds. Consider the list below
- Layered thermal clothing
- Hand-pulled sledges, skies, axe, and daggers.
- Enough food for 2-3 days
- Clear communication and companionship
How to Treat Hyperthermia?
- Gently move the person out of the cold. Protect the person from the wind, especially around the neck and head.
- Insulate the individual from the cold ground
- Remove wet clothing. Replace wet things with warm, dry coats or blankets. Focus on the center of the body.
- If possible eat warm, sweet, nonalcoholic drinks.
- Start CPR if the person shows no signs of life
How to Ice Climb?
- Before anything you must be in a clear and calm head space. Gethenains are known for centering their minds and working together in the snow.
- Next prepare your tools by wrapping them with a cloth to avoid frostbite, check the edge of your tools and familiarize yourself with your surroundings. Choose edges and cracks to hold yourself for the journey. Check for hollow or dull ice by hitting them lightly.
- Slowly begin climbing when you are ready. Anchor the axe above shoulder level, swinging from your shoulder, not your wrist. Test the placement by pulling down firmly. If it sticks solid, trust it. Keep three points of contact and follow the rhythm.
- Lastly, Rest your weight on your axe, not your muscles. Breathe through the scarf or mask to keep the lungs warm. Sip melted snow with a leather pouch if needed.
