Hi all and welcome back to another Nukumea Newsletter. With this better weather recently, it has been great to see so many students arriving at school on bikes and scooters. That new bike and scooter rack shed is going to be well stocked next year!

With the end of the year approaching fast, there are a lot of events coming up. Most of this newsletter focuses on sharing information and times for these events. The first of these is School Photos which had to be recheduled from last week to tomorrow.

Important Upcoming Dates:

  • Thursday 30th November - Photo Day
  • Wednesday 6th December - Community Christmas Picnic 5pm - 7pm
  • Monday 11th December - Dawn Blessing of new Buildings 5.30 am
  • Monday 18th December - Last day of school
  • Wednesday 31st January - Open Day
  • Thursday 1st February - Normal classes begin

It is with great sadness (but also excitement for him) that we are letting you all know that Nathan Bitting is leaving us at the end of the year. Nathan arrived to us with strengths in IT and Maths but has also helped our team to develop a true questioning culture amongst the staff so that we are always looking to dig deeper into our ideas. Our kids will miss his jokes and joining in on the sports grounds at break times. I know that everyone involved all loved the Sustainability challenge and Zoo Trip that happened recently, which he was the main organiser for.

Nathan is going to Northcross Intermediate next year and is looking forward to the change of working with older students. We wish him all the best for this next adventure!

End of Year Reports

On Monday 4th December, the Learning Content on Hero will be turned off to whānau. This is to allow teachers to populate the report page with a literacy, maths and general comment as well as updating the progress charts for the End of Year report. The report page will go live at 3pm on Friday 15th December. We will not be printing reports however you are able to print your own copy if you wish by clicking the print icon at the top of the page. Our reports are accessed by clicking in to the 'Nukumea Report 2023' page. If you want to know more about the terminology used in the progress charts, click 'About This Page' and it will bring up our Hero parent presentation.

Students who have NOT had 10 weeks at school (this affects our new entrant students) will not be receiving an End of Year report. This is because they haven't been at school long enough to meet the end of year benchmarks. All our new entrant students have a 10 week meeting with their whānau teacher where teachers will comment on our transition to school goals.

We would like to get an idea of the number of students and family members who will be taking part in our Shared Picnic and Christmas Celebration next Wednesday, December 6th. 5-7pm. Depending on the weather, we may enjoy our picnic in the reserve across from the school. Please bring a picnic meal and blanket for you and your family and lawn chairs if required. You will be able to access toilets and water from the school site. Here is the schedule: 5-6pm - arrive at Nukumea, enjoy your picnic meal, catch up with other families, and participate in games for the children. At 6pm, our programme will begin in our Kākāriki classroom. There will be songs and other items shared, including some Christmas carols you can join in on. If you have any specific questions, please contact: office@nukumea.school.nz https://forms.gle/s7ciqauPiZTfoBnN8
We have a very special occasion coming up with the blessing of our new school buildings. This will be a very momentous event and we would love for you to join us, but do appreciate the difficulty of such an early start. If you feel that your children will be able to handle the early start and then a day at school afterwards, please feel free to join us. It would help our planning if you can rsvp to office@nukumea.school.nz so we can organise catering for afterwards.

Our Term 1 2024 concept is 'Diversity'. The first step of our inquiry cycle is called 'Framing the Inquiry', which is where we share the understanding of our concept with our students and our school community, to help decide the context the learning will be framed around. We would love for you to talk about this with your child and share your ideas around this concept by filling in this form.

The refreshed curriculum focuses on the importance of learning across curriculum areas contributing to the lives of ākonga and their vision of a thriving community as it has personal, participatory, pathways and planetary value. We consider all these values when planning the context of each inquiry cycle.

We are really excited to start offering Music Lessons from 2024. Please see the adverts below for more information on learning instruments from next year.

Have a great week and we look forward to seeing you at our upcoming celebrations!
