Artists Statement
Photography gives me the ability to freeze one of life’s delicate moments and preserve its essence. I am an expressionist and abstract photographer, reinterpreting the world through imagery that is more than a representational photograph. To that end, I look for the essence of a subject rather than its first observable appearance. A photograph is the starting point for me, it begins with a photograph but morphs and changes, so I refer to my work as “lens based art.”
I work with techniques such as hand coloring with cold wax and oil paints, gilding with gold transfer lear, and cyanotypes made in the sun but created from digital negatives. Using these modalities, the pieces cannot be precisely replicated. Each piece of alternative process photography has its own colors, cracks, shading and tones. Although each piece will differ in some way, my camera is instrumental in the initial planning.
My inspiration is drawn from admiring the beauty, yet transient state of nature, emotion, symmetry and asymmetry. I am drawn to a range of human experience ad mostly my themes are wonder, hope, serendipity and joy. My aim is to create pieces that challenge the viewer to observe a message of universal resonance.
