Working nights can be tough. Driving along when everybody else is going home to rest, relax, spend time with family and sleep. It's worse in the morning when you're fatigued after a long shift and joined by drivers who are feeling refreshed, even if a bit bleary eyed, after their sleep. Staying awake when the rest of the country is sleeping is tough.
Judges' remarks - To keep shelves stocked and factories operating, trucks need to work 24/7, this photo helped to uncover the night-shift work that truckers do. The text also helps the viewer to understand this saying: “staying awake when the rest of the country is sleeping is tough”.
The key to staying awake is by making sure you have had sufficient rest. There's no real way around these and they're an important tool in the road haulage industry to keep both the driver and other road users safe. They ensure the driver has the required minimum rests during the day, between shifts and weekly rests.
