Ariel Quartet & Orion Weiss: A Chamber Connection Forged in Youth, Thriving in Mastery
The Ariel Quartet got to know the brilliant young pianist Orion Weiss when they studied together as teenagers at the Perlman Music Program. They’re all now in their mid-30s, their careers have blossomed, and they’ve continued to collaborate regularly. In addition to offering the standard piano quintets from Dvorak, Brahms, and Schumann, they offer rarely heard masterpieces by Bloch, Korngold, and Dohnányi.
Distinguished by its virtuosity, probing musical insight, and impassioned, fiery performances, the Ariel Quartet has garnered critical praise worldwide for more than a quarter of a century. Formed when the members were just teenagers, the Ariel was recently named recipient of the prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award granted by Chamber Music America. In addition to maintaining a busy international touring schedule, the Quartet serves as the Faculty Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music.
One of the most sought-after soloists and chamber music collaborators of his generation, Orion Weiss is widely regarded as a “brilliant pianist” (The New York Times) with “powerful technique and exceptional insight” (The Washington Post). With a warmth to his playing that outwardly reflects his engaging personality, Weiss’s “delicate, even fingerwork” (Washington Classical Review) and “head-spinning range of colors” (Chicago Tribune) have dazzled audiences around the world. He has performed with all of the major orchestras of North America, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic.
