Nukumea Newsletter Term 3 Week 3 2024

Kia ora koutou, as we move into Week Three of Term Three, the school is alive with activity. The classrooms and play areas are all bustling with energy and enthusiasm. We have had a number of visitors to the school over the past couple of weeks and they have all loved seeing the engaged vibe in the learning spaces and the ways our students so positively interact with everyone. Their manaakitanga is appreciated as all the visitors receive so many smiles and polite greetings.

The Olympics are in full swing, and watching athletes from around the world showcase their talents and dedication is truly inspiring. It’s a reminder of the heights that can be reached through hard work, determination, and collaboration. As we move forward, let’s keep the Olympic spirit alive in our school community. Let’s encourage each other to aim high, work hard, and support each other. Just as Olympians train, compete, and celebrate together, we can foster an environment where everyone’s efforts are recognised, and everyone’s achievements are celebrated (this is exactly what our value of Whakapuāwai is all about). This collective spirit of striving for greatness and lifting each other up is what makes Nukumea such a special place.

Maths

Last newsletter we shared a video explaining the essential information about the learning models and approaches we use, with a particular focus on Literacy and Maths. We also shared information about how to read and understand your child's progress, achievement, and reporting.

This issue has hit the media this week with the Prime Minister sharing some shocking statistics about Maths achievement across the country. The research report actually says achievement in Maths has not significantly changed in the last 10 years but this is now being benchmarked against the new expectations due to come in with the new curriculum. While other schools across the country will need to raise their expectations in Maths, our reported Maths achievement and progress for your child is already against these new curriculum expectations. So, whilst we all want to see even more progress occur, please be assured that we are already working together towards the new, higher expectations in Maths.

For more on how we approach Maths at Nukumea, please read this one pager here.

How should we use the space past the field?

Our Board of Trustees and Senior Leadership Team continue to look to the future in regards to planning and maximising the opportunities for students and whānau at our school. The school's land extends past the fence by the field and down into the area of trees beyond.

We would love to hear what the community would like done with this land. We have two main ideas we would like your feedback on and would also like to see if you have any further ideas to be considered. Please complete the short survey on the link below to have your views added in to be considered:

We are delighted to partner with Mitey over the next year to grow and support the mental health and wellbeing of all our students.

The Sir John Kirwan Foundation has designed Mitey with NZ teachers and the University of Auckland to provide an evidence-based approach to teaching mental health education to primary and intermediate aged children.

It is built around the NZ curriculum and embedded into everyday learning, to ensure children are equipped with the age-appropriate skills and knowledge they need to recognise and respond to mental health issues in both themselves and others before they enter teenage years.

Mitey has successfully implemented its approach to schools in Auckland and we are excited to be included.

Uniform

A reminder that our uniform is the school top and fleece jumper paired with any navy shorts, skirts or pants.

With the cold and wet of winter we understand that things will take longer to dry after being washed. A major reason we went with the fleece over a school hoody was the speed at which the fleece dries. Also with colder weather, track pants are definitely warmer, but please ensure they are navy in colour for school.

We also have new dance classes starting soon in our Hall after school on Thursdays. See below for information and how to sign up.

Finally for this week, we have had a lot of illness lately. Staff and students dealing with colds, flu and that sneaky Covid which is still lurking around. Keep warm, keep up the Vitamin C and remember the following as ways to avoid spreading it further:

  • Wash your hands for 20 seconds and dry them well.
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Don’t share toothbrushes, cups, food utensils or towels.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces, like doorknobs, often.
  • and most importantly: Stay home if you're sick and avoid close contact with others.

Have a warm and healthy week enjoying the end of the Olympics. Go Kiwis!
