Tornado Men's Track & Field 2023-24 season preview

It's a new year for the King University men's track and field team, who are also under new leadership as Jack Brunecz takes over for his first season at the helm. He will look to a roster that features nine returning athletes from last season.

2022-23 Season Highlights

  • Two individual top-10 finishes at Indoor Conference Carolinas Championships
  • Six individual top-10 finishes at Outdoor Conference Carolinas Championships
  • Among those with top-10 finishes at the outdoor conference championships was Mason Sanders (Steeplechase, 5th), Zach Stroin (Javelin, 8th) and Josh Booher (10,000 meters, 10th)

MASON SANDERS

6-0 | Jr. | Distance | Kingsport, Tenn.

Indoor Highlights

  • PR of 3:00.26 in the 1000 meters
  • Set a PR in the 3000 meters at the conference championships, finishing in 9:36.93.

Outdoor Highlights

  • 5th in 3000 meter steeplechase, setting a PR time of 9:53.41
  • Also set PR's in the 5000 meters (16:03.11) and 800 meters (2:12.73)

MATTHEW HENFIELD

6-3 | Jr. | Mid Distance | Freeport, Grand Bahamas

Indoor Highlights

  • Part of a 4x400 relay team that took 6th at 2022-23 conference championships
  • Individual finish of 9th in the high jump at 2021-22 conference championships

Outdoor Highlights

  • First career event win came at the 2022 Southside Power & Fitness Invitational in the high jump
  • Part of two relay teams that had top-10 finishes at 2022-23 Conference Championships

ZACH STROIN

6-0 | So. | Throws/Sprints | Lanoka Harbor, N.J.

Indoor Highlights

  • Set a personal record in the 60 meters at the conference championships, finishing in 7.44 seconds
  • Also posted a personal record in the 200 meters at the COROS Collegiate Challenge, crossing the line in 24.57 seconds

Outdoor Hightlights

  • 8th in the javelin throw at the conference championships (45.02 meters)
  • Set a pair of personal records at the Montreat College Open, setting a PR in the javelin throw with a mark of 47.21 meters and the long jump with a mark of 5.83 meters

CLATHON HENFIELD

6-0 | Sr. | Mid Distance | Freeport, Grand Bahamas

Indoor Highlights

  • Has four top-10 finishes at the conference championships
  • PR of 51.36 in the 400 meter
  • PR of 12.62 meters in the triple jump

Outdoor Highlights

  • Second team All-Conference in the long jump, where he set a personal record of 7.17m
  • Posted a PR in the 400 meters of 50.37 seconds at the Conference Carolinas championships

JOSH BOOHER

Indoor Highlights

  • Mile personal record time of 4:49.27
  • 3000 meters personal record time of 9:19.79 came at the 2022 conference championships

Outdoor Highlights

  • First career top-10 finish at the conference championships came in 2022, finishing 10th with a time of 32:38.33

HEAD COACH

Jack Brunecz

Jack Brunecz was named the head coach of Cross Country and Track and Field in July 2023 after a stint in the same position at Methodist University, where he guided the Monarchs to 117 all-conference honorees, including 46 first team honorees. He owns USATF Coaching Education Level 1 and 2 certifications with a distance events focus.
