2023 Recap

Moravian University clinched its 10th Landmark Conference title in an electrifying showdown.

Despite an early 1-0 lead by Susquehanna University in the top of the first inning, the game remained deadlocked until the final stretch. Moravian, facing their last at-bat before the possibility of an extra game, found hope through Marcie Silberman's impressive stand-up triple. Emily Silberman then equalized the score 1-1 with a clutch RBI single to the right side.

As the game stretched into the bottom of the eighth, Holly Walter's drawn walk followed by a steal of second, placed the Greyhounds within striking distance. Capitalizing on a fly ball and advancing to third, Walter positioned herself to seal the victory. Lindsey Gawrys' line drive brought Walter home, clinching the winning run.

But the Greyhounds' journey was far from over. Securing the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Softball Tournament, Moravian continued to impress. Their NCAA campaign culminated with a tie for fifth place among 62 teams. Under the guidance of Head Coach Josh Baltz, Moravian captured not only the Landmark Conference Championship but also marked their 19th NCAA Tournament appearance. Additionally, the team claimed their sixth NCAA Division III Regional title and secured their first NCAA Division III Super Regional championship. Their remarkable season also saw them reach the finals for the fourth time in program history.

Moravian University

Moravian University, with 10 championship wins under its belt, is once again gearing up to host the 2024 Landmark Conference Softball Championship for the 11th time.

Their team is packed with talent, with every starter from last year's squad that made waves at the NCAA Division III College World Series. Under the guidance of their second-year head coach, the Greyhounds boast a lineup with eight starters batting .290 or higher this season. Collectively, they're hitting an impressive .347, tallying 242 runs and launching 32 homers.

Marcie Silberman emerges as a standout power hitter for Moravian. In 35 games, the sophomore boasts a solid .364 average alongside 15 doubles, 14 homers, and 50 RBI. Her recent grand slam against Manhattanville not only secured a victory but also etched her name in the school and conference single-season record books. Senior Emily Silberman, like her sister, adds to the team's offensive firepower with a .378 average, four homers, and 30 RBI.

On the pitching front, Madi Cunningham and Natalie Otto form a strong duo, boasting a combined record of 25-5. Cunningham, with 15 wins under her belt, sports an impressive 1.87 ERA with 60 strikeouts, while Otto holds a 10-3 record with 73 strikeouts. Their dominance is reflected in the league standings, leading in opponent batting average with a stifling .226.

Catholic University

In her inaugural season at the helm, Coach Sophie Maccarone guides the Cardinals to their impressive 12th consecutive postseason appearance.

Catholic University heads into the championship as the No. 2 seed, capping off a solid season with a 27-13 overall record and a 10-6 standing in conference play.

Keep an eye on first-year standout Miz Szap, who recently earned the Rookie of the Year title. Szap boasts a batting average of .358, securing 44 hits, tallying 25 runs, 20 RBI, and notching seven doubles throughout 38 games.

Pitching is another feather in the Cardinals' cap, with Abrynn Arcement and Alex Pley leading the charge. The duo has compiled an impressive 22-9 record, backed by a combined total of 89 strikeouts. Arcement boasts an 11-5 record with an earned run average of 1.98, while Pley holds her own with an 11-4 record and an earned run average of 2.03.

Juniata College

Juniata is making the tournament after a full season of play for the first time since 2017. Juniata, along with every other team that competed in the 2021 Covid season made the Landmark postseason. The Eagles secured the third seed with a 10-6 record in conference play. Despite a tie with Catholic in the standings, the Cardinals clinched the tiebreaker by sweeping the Eagles during the regular season to earn the second seed.

Keep an eye on Jessie Hunt, as she boasts an impressive .416 batting average and a slugging percentage of 1.070 across 29 games. The junior powerhouse has notched 37 hits, including 10 doubles, three homers, one triple, and 25 RBI this season.

Alongside Hunt, Juniata boasts a trio of Eagles with 20 or more RBI this spring. Alison Superka leads the charge with 26, closely followed by Claire Thomas with 22 and Morgan Brumbaugh with 20.

Juniata's lineup showcases depth and strength, with an impressive eight players boasting a batting average of .300 or better.

Lycoming College

Following a split against Susquehanna University in their regular season closer, Lycoming College softball secured their second consecutive postseason berth. The Warriors returned to face the River Hawks on May 7th for the league's play-in game, with the final spot in the double-elimination four-team championship up for grabs.

In the win-and-you're-in game, senior Kyle Segraves stepped up, scoring a run and driving in two more to propel the Warriors to a 3-0 victory.

Highlighting the team's versatility is dual-threat player Avery Eiswerth. Offensively, the junior has been a standout, boasting a solid .300 batting average along with a team-leading 16 RBI, to go along with four doubles, three homers, and two triples. In the pitching circle, Eiswerth has also been a force, tallying a 7-7 record with an impressive 80 strikeouts to her name.
