Leading the way! Mrs Yeadon's recognition of Excellence

Congratulations to BBHS teacher Mrs Ebony Yeadon who was presented with her Highly Accomplished Accreditation medal this week at the State Library of NSW.

HALT is a national accreditation that acknowledges teachers for their impact on student learning and recognises leadership and commitment to excellence in teaching.

Ebony was one of 86 NSW cross-sector teachers who achieved this high level of accreditation. There are now 446 HALTs across the state and Byron Bay High School is very proud to have 7 teachers now with this significant accomplishment. The talent and commitment of these teachers make them a great asset to their classes, our school and the broader community. Great teachers matter!

Ebony is a role model of excellence for all our staff and students. Congratulations Ebony!

Ms Janine Marcus - Principal

State Senior Wind Band

Hannah represents BBHS in Sydney!

This week, Year 10 student Hannah C participated in the State Senior Wind Band at the Sydney Opera House. The State Senior Wind Band lit up the stage with unforgettable performances in the Festival of Instrumental Music!

"Made up of 54 exceptional musical students from 33 NSW public schools, this ensemble came together after just one online session and two days of rehearsals – and delivered something extraordinary" (The Arts Unit)

Under the guidance of Steve Williams and Hayden Dalton, the band performed powerful works such as Kosciuszko (Brendan Collins) and Ireland of Legend and Lore (Robert W. Smith) – challenging pieces that showcased their incredible skill and passion.

These talented musicians proudly represented their schools, families and the vibrant talent in our NSW public schools.

Year 12 vs Staff Touch Football

The ultimate showdown!

Well, they gave it their best… but unfortunately not many tries were scored by Year 12 on the day! Yesterday, the 2nd chapter in the 3-part teachers vs Year 12 saga saw the 2 sides clash in a fiery game of touch footy.

The teachers came out strong, dominating the first 15 minutes before the familiar aches and old injuries started creeping in. Despite this, we managed to hold our ground. Year 12 threw everything at us, playing a version of touch football that no one could quite recognise — which ultimately led to their downfall.

Final score = Teachers 5 – Students 2. The staff may have limped off the field, but we claimed victory once again!

Next up… the final showdown: Soccer. We’ll be honest — the teachers are feeling a little nervous about this one, so training starts today!

Thanks for the fun, Year 12 — bring it on!

Mrs Kelley Caoyonan - Year 12 Year Advisor, PDHPE teacher and Sport Organiser

Empowering students to have a voice on local issues

The Living Lab 'What Matters Most?' workshop

Students from classes Year 10G HSIE and Year 11 Geography spent this morning with the team from Living Lab Northern Rivers to find out ‘What Matters Most?’ This workshop is part of a larger scale project that provides a voice to communities that will be heard by the state government.

The project will inform government plans for the future, and the young people who contributed today can feel proud of the way they represented their cohort.

Students worked in small groups to discuss their values and then made independent decisions about the issues and solutions that may impact them. Thanks to the Living Lab for providing this opportunity to empower these students in such a hopeful manner.

Mr Stuart Galletly-Salisbury - Head Teacher HSIE

ASX Schools Sharemarket Game

BBHS are 1st, 2nd AND 3rd in the country at the end of Week 2!

Way to go Byron Bay High School! Under the watchful eye of HSIE teacher, Mr Stevenson, our students continue to go from strength to strength in this game, and are at the top of the national leaderboard!

Our awesome run in the ASX Schools Sharemarket Game continues!

The ASX Schools Sharemarket Game teaches students about investing and the Sharemarket, and they get to put into practice what they are learning. Students receive $50,000 in virtual funds that they can invest over a 10 week period, in over 300 companies listed on the ASX. The prices students buy and sell their shares at are the same as in the live market. This is as close to real life share trading as you can get and is a fantastic teaching tool for our future investors!

Watch this space... we look forward to following our student's future successes.

Mr Dale Stevenson - HSIE teacher

Debating news

Year 7 and 8 Debating Team B take the win!

On Friday 29 August, our Year 7 and 8 Debating group Team B stepped up for the 3rd and final round of the Premier’s Debating Challenge. Facing Maclean High School, our team of Evie R, Jasmine B, Imogen D, 4th speaker Zara A and Chairperson, Archie Dempster, debated on the topic of whether social media companies should give a portion of their profits to youth mental health services.

Despite some strong competition from Maclean High School, our Byron Bay students convincingly overpowered their opponents arguing in the affirmative side, and were judged the winners of the final round! A big congratulations to our Byron Bay Team B!
