Frances Marie: Advocate for Literacy in Black Children By Aniya Misher Allison

Greensboro native Frances Marie is a Black author whose passion stems from sharing positive representations of Black families through her writing.

Spending Time with Mommy

On Jan 30, 2023, Marie released her first children’s book, “Spending Time with Mommy.” She tells a story of a Black mother and her daughter Skye visiting a plant nursery. The book was self-published and is now available on Amazon and the bookshelves of Wake County libraries.

Shades Beneath the Oak Tree

In 2025, Marie also plans to release her newest book, “Shades Beneath the Oak Tree.”

“It’s a celebration of all skin tones of all nationalities and races, but specifically honing in on a little girl named Layla. She is dark skin, and it's really a celebration of her beautiful chocolate skin,” Marie said.

Her Hobbies

Alongside her journey of being an author, Marie also has a passion for music. In Jan 2024, she released her first single, “Caged Bird”, inspired by Maya Angelou. She also loves to cook new recipes and shop for home decor.
