A new generation of film makers. Year 2 film skills

To Quote Film maker David Fincher “In film, we sculpt time, we sculpt behaviour and we sculpt light,” and with Mr Williams from Film Skills Wales "We sculpt young minds to be the next Film makers."
Collaborating with experts and friend from other schools.
We are excited for films skills to begin.

Let's take you back to September 2025, Year 2 eagerly awaited the arrival of Mr Williams. The excitement was building, the children were wondering what they were going to learn. From that very first session it was straight to work, we were now officially film makers. Week one and we were creating ideas for our script, naming character, setting scenes and deciding on themes.

Literacy week "we are expressing ourselves through language which is key"
Setting the scene for Our movie
Science and technology "we are being curious and searching for answers as its essential to understanding and predicting phenomena"

"It's week 2 and today we are ambitious capable learners who use technologies creatively to communicate, find and analyse information."

Today was so much fun the children got to learn all about the camera, how it works, what the parts are called and different ways they are used on set.

Jacob enjoyed being the cameraman

Jude's dreams of being a camera man coming true.

We leant all about the different parts

we all loved it.....

"Today I am learning to develop my understanding of how things work."
Humanities "we are learning to use our senses to explore the world around us"

Today was location scouting day

So much fun was had today we were location scouting. We learnt all about what we need to look for when you are scouting a location for your film. We checked the lighting, we checked angles and spaces available. We looked indoors and outdoors. We took lots of practice shots.

We checked the lighting

We checked the angles

We scouted indoor locations....

and outdoor locations.

Expressive arts "we are enterprising, creative contributors who connect and apply their knowledge and skills to create ideas and products"

"Today we are learning to retell stories and recall events using pictures to support me."

Today was an exciting day. We started making our story boards which film directors use to show what the actors have to do on set. You draw out the scene, add in instructions and directions. We took the storyboards with us to start the filming of our film "Bugs life"

Creating story boards like real directors
Health and well-being "we are confident individuals who take measured decisions about lifestyle and manage risks."

Today was all about filming and learning about safety on a film set.

In film skills today after a session on location filming scenes for our movie, we learnt all about the safety issues when filming and what dangers to look out. Health and safety on set is a very serious issue and everyone is responsible for their own and others safety. We watched this video and then completed worksheets spotting all the safety issues.

Maths & Numeracy " today we can solve problems and reflect on our learning"

Todays films skills session consisted of more scenes being film and a session on measuring distance. On set one of the most important jobs is setting up equipment, sets and props, to do this the crew needs to be able to measure carefully to make sure everything is in the right place, so this is what we did.

Lots and lots of filming sessions all until the end of the autumn term.
The big day has arrived we are off to the Odeon cinema to watch out the premiere of our movie "Bug Squad"

BEST DAY EVER

The whole class, our teacher and parents were all invited, we went on the bus and got to sit in the posh seat, we all had the most amazing time. We watched our film Bug Squad and Pen-Y-Bryns movie Goosebumps.

The learners become the teachers.

At the beginning of spring term Year 2 film makers collaborated with reception class to produce a short film.

We started by voting on a theme and location for our new movie, then we came up with ideas for our characters, we also decided to add in as much welsh as possible.

We worked on the script ideas

Getting the ideas down on paper

We made our story boards.

The ideas are flowing
Finally filming begins

We used lots of different locations, we filmed inside using a green screen, we filmed outside using a green screen and the school grounds, we made steady progress

We started with filming inside on the green screen

We filmed outside on location

we filmed in the museum on the green screen
