Picturer Portfolio 2024 Gavin Carpenter: Digital Photography

Flight

For this photo, I took a photo of a bird during a sunset and I flipped the area in which the bird was flying. My goal was to capture a good sunset while also keeping the bird in the area of the photo that was flipped. I like the photo because it has good colors while also keeping the mountains in the photo and it also gives a sense of freedom as the bird is flying into the sunset with a lot of open room. I also hope the viewer of the photo feels a certain sense of freedom while looking at the photo as well.

For this photo, (runway) I also wanted to capture the colors of the sunset but this time I included a road that I wanted to act as a leading line. And on the road includes a man walking. The part of the image that I flipped I specifically chose this photo as it would be a cool effect to have the man walking, in the area that I flipped showing him upside down and right side up. I feel like this photo has a cool effect with the man walking the way the flipped road lines up with the normal road and how it leads into the sunset. I also feel the metallic road guards in the photo pop and look cool. For this photo, I intended to make the photo feel lonely featuring a lone man and a blank landscape with no signs of life except for the man walking alone.

Hopes and Dreams

For this photo I took it from the front of a drainage system looking down it into a cloudy sunset. My goal with this photo was to serve a purpose with the drainage ditch serving as the long road of hard work and the clouds representing the payoff. I tried to more represent this meaning with the long road of hard work looking bland and bleak but the payoff being big and beautiful. I feel this photo accurately represents my goal and the colors of the clouds i really enjoy. I hope when the viewer looks at this photo, they can figure out the meaning and enjoy the clouds like I do.

In this photo (the climb) i wanted to similarly represent the same meaning my previous photo had. With a long hard journey to a big payoff, this is shown in this photo with people taking a long hike to the arch only to get to the top reaching the big beautiful payoff. Similarly in this photo the big payoff is represented with a large, beautiful cloud. For this photo I took a photo of an arch in Utah, and I took a photo of a large burst of clouds that would work inside the arch. I feel this photo accurately represents the meaning i intended to the same level as the previous photo and I hope that similarly the viewer can assume or come up with a meaning themselves.

Snow

For this project i need to recreate the bokeh effect and in this photo i reached my goal as i used the snow and a streetlight to get this effect. I feel like this photo shows how much snow is falling and how the light reflects off of it while also giving a calming feeling. I also feel like it serves as a good connection to the state where it was taken this being Colorado. I hope that when the viewer sees the photo they make their own connection with the snow and what it reminds them of or if its similar to the state they live in.

Streetlight

Similarly in this photo i used the streelight and snow to achieve the bokeh effect. But rather in this photo my goal was to get a closer view of the streetlight capturing more of the reflections on the streelight and the icicles that formed on it. And because of it being closer and able to see more reflections you get more of a sparkle from the snow and streetlight. I feel like with this closer view and reaches more of the effect while also looking more pleasing. I hope the audience enjoys the color and ambience of the photo with the slow fall of the snow only illuminated by the streetlight that would otherwise be invisible in the darkness around it.

Bright Surroundings

For this project I need to capture the movement of light and for this effect I needed to lower my shutter speed. With a light up lamp and glowsticks I was able to effectively reach my goal and capture what lights look like in this slower shutter speed. The main focus being the design on the light-up lamp and the background only enhancing it. I feel the photo is very pleasing with all the different colors and designs that really pop with the surroundings being very dark. I hope the viewer also finds it pleasing and fun too look at considering it to be an effective computer background or screensaver.

Three Sixty

With this photo I wanted to use the same materials but get a different effect than the photo shown before. Instead of having the glowsticks moving in the background I had them spin around the lamp. By doing this I made the lamp stand out more while also making the glowsticks look like they are moving more. This serves as more of an action photo because there is more movement compared to the one previous. I feel like my goal was reached with the spinning movement of the glowsticks but still making the lamp stick out. I hope that the audience will find this photo just as interesting and pleasing as the one before it.

Stars

For this type of light color I used the same material of glowsticks but wanted to make the shutter speed a lot slower so I could paint more of the sky using the glowsticks. I set the shutter speed to go off for Sixty seconds and used the glowsticks to show the light and color being painted. My goal was to have the glowsticks be vibrant and show up well in the photo and they did show colorful movements and patterns. I feel that this photo represents what can be done with light and slow shutter speed showing the possibility's that can be reached if you wanted to paint a light picture. I hope that this photo interests the viewer and that they find it unique and serve as something they haven't seen before.

Aurora

Similar to the phot before it I wanted to paint the sky with the same materials showing the designs that can be made with a simple process. In this photo specifically my goal was to make the glowsticks create more of a wave effect and I did this by moving them differently in frame while the shutter speed was counting down. I think that in this photo you can easily see the wave effect that the glowsticks created and how different of a design it made although using the same process as the photo before it. Except this photo better created a design in the sky rather than show the glowsticks and what they could do. I hope the viewer sees this photo and finds more interest in the use of light painting.

In this project the goal was to take a black and white photo and add stitching to it to add more variety and design to the original photo. For this photo (Moon) it shows the moon resting in the rocks and my goal was to bring more attention to the moon. The way I did this was to center my stitching around the moon whilst keeping depth by not overlapping the stitching with the rocks. The design around the moon being a simple stitch design spiraling outwards from the bright moon. I feel like the moon and the rocks fit together well and the stitching brings the whole thing together making a effective and unique product to this project. I hope that upon the viewer seeing this they enjoy the look of the rocks and moon together and the different idea of using stitching implemented into a photo.

For this photo (Pathway) I wanted to use the similar stitch pattern which I thought was effective but implement it into a different scene, while also creating a separate meaning for the reader to create. in this photo it shows a hiking trail fade into darkness with the stitching leading the rest of the way. my goal was to create a meaning of "creating your own path" as the pathway starts on its own, but the stitching makes its own path to the top. I feel that the photo is dark an alluring but also accurately serves a meaning to it. I hope that the viewer can create their own meaning to the photo or agree with the one that I intended.
