Developing Skills nursery, autumn term, week 7

It has been a busy week with lots of opportunities for the children to develop their skills across our curriculum areas. The teachers love 'sneaky learning' whilst following the children's interests through play.

Our cafe is still open for business. The children enjoy taking the customer's orders, preparing the food, and serving it. Even the washing up seems to be a job they take pleasure in. This is all fabulous communication and language development.

Healthy hummus and crackers was very popular.

Over in the creative zone, Mrs Branson was teaching us all about an artist called David Hockney. He creates collages of people. We took the characters out of our key story 'The Colour Monster' and had a go at making our own collages. The improvement in scissor skills over the week has been fantastic!

Super independent collage work.
It takes a lot of concentration to use scissors correctly.
We were proud of the results.

Mr Roberts has got us all thinking about growth and how our bodies change. He helped us to study images of how humans grow and then made a timeline with us.

There is independent drawing and writing happening all over the classroom, we are very excited by all the mark making. It isn't always with a pen that we develop our writing skills, sometimes it can be a finger in glitter, foam, flour or anything.

We've had lots of fun singing nursery rhymes. We are beginning to tune into rhyming words, which is a tricky skill. You can help at home by pointing out rhymes, or making silly ones up.

Maths has been sorting and grouping by size and colour. We are also practising counting to ten by rote every day.

We love hearing the children sing their favourite songs. Two of our girls told us about a song they like to sing at home in their language. It's beautiful and it is now a class favourite!

Did you know, we speak over 17 languages in our Early Years setting? We love to celebrate different cultures. If your child has a favourite song, please let me know over class dojo and we will play the song in class. Thank you!
