Message from the Interim Chair
The Department of Public Health Sciences continues to thrive as a dynamic community of scholars, educators, and professionals united by a shared commitment to advancing health and well-being locally and globally. Over the past year, our department has demonstrated remarkable progress across every facet of our mission, expanding research productivity, strengthening academic programs, and deepening partnerships that translate science into practice. Our faculty have secured more than $21 million in new grants and contracts, reflecting the department’s growing impact in areas ranging from chronic disease prevention and cancer survivorship to data science and health policy. With more than 380* graduate students enrolled across our M.P.H., M.S., and Ph.D. programs, we continue to train the next generation of public health leaders through rigorous, evidence-based education. This year also marked the second full year of our seven-year CEPH accreditation term, affirming the department’s continued excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. Across divisions, our teams are fostering innovation, advancing interdisciplinary research, and building a culture that values collaboration, mentorship, and inclusion. As we look ahead, our focus remains clear: to accelerate discovery, strengthen community partnerships, and ensure that our work meaningfully improves lives. I am deeply grateful to our faculty, staff, students, and partners whose dedication and creativity drive this department forward. Together, we are shaping a healthier, more equitable future for all.

POWERED BY YOU
Launched in 2024 to strengthen communication and collaboration, Powered By You continued to unite faculty and staff through departmental town halls designed to build community and turn feedback into action. The August 2024 session, A Collaborative Afternoon of Innovation and Insight, featured presentations on grief and bereavement care, substance use treatment, and digital communications, emphasizing teamwork and the value of research that drives community impact. The December 2024 meeting, Strengthening Connections and Collaboration, combined creativity and reflection through research presentations, artistic performances, and a discussion led by the Biostatistics Collaboration and Consulting Core on advancing faculty and student success. The series continued in Spring 2025 with From Biomarkers to Icebreakers, blending research presentations on multiple sclerosis with interactive wellness activities that encouraged laughter, connection, and reflection. Together, these sessions reflected the department’s ongoing commitment to an inclusive, collaborative culture that inspires innovation and strengthens its shared mission in public health.
INSTITUTIONAL & NATIONAL RANKINGS
Through strong NIH funding and national recognition, the Department of Public Health Sciences continues to advance impactful research that informs policy, improves health outcomes, and enhances community resilience. Recent evaluations from the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research and U.S. News & World Report highlight the department’s growing distinction among top public health programs nationwide.

CPH EXAM
In FY25, the Department of Public Health Sciences continued its commitment to professional development by supporting students and alumni in obtaining the Certified in Public Health (CPH) credential. Through department-sponsored vouchers, eligible participants were able to register for the national CPH exam at no cost. All graduating students who took the exam achieved a 100% pass rate.
Our field demands both integrity and preparedness, and I am grateful that DPHS has reaffirmed those values by fostering accessible, high-quality opportunities for certification, professional development, and continued learning. Receiving a scholarship that covered the CPH Bootcamp and my exam cost was an additional testament to their support. Through participation in their CPH Bootcamp, I received structured, expert-led MSPH content review and the encouragement needed to confidently prepare for and succeed in the CPH exam.
