Weaving jazz and folk songwriting, Emma Coates forms her mellow, intimate sound with quartet lineup. Her deeply personal storytelling exploring feminine identity and growth is complimented by the intricate, airy tones of her voice and band.
Her debut EP 'Borrower' was released in October 2025. "Giving myself the space to explore both musically and emotionally has been very gratifying, and I feel I've created something that encapsulates myself fully, with all of the flaws, vulnerability and warm moments together. Each song tells the story of one of my experiences as a woman and someone who’s struggled with self-identity, some more literally than others, and getting to play them with my closest friends has been better than I could’ve ever hoped - they've done an incredible job of capturing the nostalgic, slightly melancholic, folky sound that I set out to create.”

Emma Coates has featured on BBC Radio 3, BBC Introducing and Amazing Radio UK & USA, as well as receiving acclaim from Cage Riot and RGM Magazine. She and her quartet have supported the likes of Xhosa Cole and Kinkajous, performing in venues such as Brudenell Social Club, The Domino Club, Belgrave Music Hall (Leeds), Band on the Wall, Matt & Phreds (Manchester) and Sidney & Mathilda (Sheffield).
She has played on the Welcome to Leeds stage as part of Leeds Jazz Festival 2025 and at Live At Leeds in the City 2025.
