What is a podcast?

"A podcast or generically netcast, is an episodic series of digital audio or video files which a user can download in order to listen to." - Wikipedia

Planning your podcast/ audio recording

  • Consider audience
  • Outline/script
  • Typical podcast outline: intro music/ title sequence, voice audio, outro music/ sequence: see our handout for template
  • Record in sections so you can easily re-record sections
  • Use a consistent recording setup- environment, distance to mic- use Adobe Podcast Mic Check to help (under Quick tools)
  • Collecting interviews (Zoom, Voice Memo, Adobe Capture- create Library first, then pull from CC Libraries in Audition)
  • Visit the I&RC Technology Lending for mics to check out
  • Visit the Audio Studio web page to book a time to use it
  • Tip: record own sound effects
  • Use Adobe Podcast Enhance Speech (under Quick tools) to automatically remove background noise and echo from previously recorded audio

Open GarageBand, click Loops, let media load
change the beat tracker from Beats to Time using the pull-down arrow, and click on the Beat Count button and the Metronome button to turn them off

Recording and editing, inserting music/ sound, Cmd-T split clip, Space bar stop/start recording, save as project (.band file) until ready to export as .mp3

Auto-saves but Cmd-Q to Quit GarageBand to force a save and close the program

Pro Tip: use the Adobe Capture mobile app on your smartphone to record audio to a Creative Cloud Library; then pull the audio files from that CC Library into Audition

Open Audition and use "Learn" feature: Help menu, Audition Learn

Options: Getting Started with Adobe Audition, Create Your First Podcast, Audition Remix (sizes audio to your video/ specific length), Reducing Background Noise

Split and rearrange to correct order: "The Innovation and Research Commons, or I&RC, is a new facility on the first floor of Auburn's main Library, RBD Library. It provides access to high-end tools, technologies, and in-person expertise to support innovative teaching and research at Auburn."

  • File, new multitrack session, can choose blank template or Podcast template
  • Workspace- Simple Editing or Classic
  • Upper left of screen or View menu- Multitrack mode, not Waveform mode
  • Editor Panel: Click R for recording on a track, select track to record on Set Input for Track (Mono, first option) Audition, Preferences, Audio Hardware if need to adjust inputs. File, import, then drag clips onto tracks to add prerecorded tracks.
  • Editor Panel: Razor tool or Cmd or Crtl-K to split, Edit, Ripple Delete, Trimming clips, Slip tool = shift contents within the clip without moving the clip on the timeline
  • Drag boxes in clip to fade, alt/option drag boxes for symmetrical fade. = to zoom in tracks, - to zoom out
  • Window, Essential Sound to assign tracks to types of audio, for ducking
  • Effects menu to apply effects to your audio
  • History panel shows edits
  • Window, Mixer to get EQ levels and effects
  • Save file, close Audition when not editing
  • Window, Metadata for ID3 podcast info
  • Exporting: File, Export, Multitrack Mixdown, Entire Session, .mp3

Remote recording with others is as easy as sharing a link! Everyone's audio is recorded in high quality locally, and then Adobe Podcast syncs it back together in the cloud automatically.

Adobe Podcast also offers a a Mic Check and Enhance Audio. Improving the audio quality of a video file is now a snap in Adobe Podcast. Just upload your .mov, Mp4 or .M4V file to the Enhance Speech tool and get studio-quality audio in seconds.
