Mrs. Johnson's Message

Aviators,

As we continue our journey through this school year, I want to take a moment to reflect on our theme: “It’s not the plane, it’s the pilot.” Here at Cedar Valley, we’re more than just a high school—we’re a launchpad for innovation, where new ideas take flight, and the boundaries of what’s possible are pushed every day. We are a community of explorers, engineers, and visionaries, and at Cedar Valley, we do things differently.

From the moment you step into our commons, you’re greeted by the iconic Wright Brothers’ airplane, suspended above you as a reminder of where bold thinking and determination can lead. Just like the Wright Brothers defied limits and took humanity to the skies, you too have the power to shape the future through creativity, resilience, and courage. That airplane isn’t just a piece of history—it’s a symbol of what’s possible when pilots, not planes, determine the course.

And in the terminals of Cedar Valley, this spirit of innovation guides everything we do. Cedar Valley isn’t just a place to learn; it’s a place where you are empowered to chart your own path. Every class, every challenge is designed to inspire creativity and fuel your curiosity. Our cutting-edge labs, classrooms, and collaborative spaces are your mission control, but the real innovation happens when you, the pilot, take control of your journey.

Our theme reminds us of an important truth: It’s not the technology, the tools, or the environment that determine your success—it’s you. The advanced resources we provide are only as powerful as the Aviators who use them. You are the one in the pilot’s seat, charting new courses, testing limits, and imagining possibilities that haven’t yet been explored.

This year, I challenge each of you to continue thinking boldly and aiming higher. As Aviators, you are not passengers—you are the pilots, the navigators, and the innovators. Whether you’re designing the next scientific breakthrough, mastering a new subject, or creating something that will inspire others, the trajectory is yours to define. And remember, we—your flight crew—are here to support and guide you every step of the way.

As you dive into this stakeholder report, I hope you enjoy learning more about how Cedar Valley is uniquely equipped to help our students achieve greatness. Together, we are building a school where innovation thrives, and where each student is prepared to pilot their own future.

Prepare for continued takeoff, Aviators. The skies are wide open, and the future is yours to shape.

With excitement and pride,

Principal Johnson

PTSA

The Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is a national organization designed to engage and empower families and communities to advocate for all children. Our Cedar Valley PTSA facilitates national and local programs such as Reflections and Battle of the Bands, provides scholarship opportunities, advocates for our school community with the Utah legislature, creates leadership and community involvement opportunities for our students, and provides support to our CVHS faculty and teachers.

PTSA meets monthly with students, faculty, and parent volunteers to discuss the best ways to support our Cedar Valley community. We strive to develop programs, resources, and leadership skills to enhance the lives of our students and their families.

Our PTSA students are able to learn and develop transferable skills through their active participation. They practice voting on student leadership then accepting those roles and responsibilities, voicing their concerns and ideas, helping to create actionable plans and facilitating follow through, coordinating and participating in events and fundraisers, and learning what goes on behind the scenes in our PTSA. Our future leaders are created from the seeds planted in today’s students. This year, we are able to offer 2 $250 scholarships.

Our CVHS PTSA has a passion for our school and community and appreciates the opportunities to show support to our CVHS faculty. We truly love being a part of something great!

2024/25 Student Council Theme

English 9

As a 9th grade team, we encourage students to find their identity as lifelong readers and writers through exposure of different literary genres. We strive to teach students to communicate effectively with others through different mediums. In our classrooms students learn to question, analyze, and argue their thinking through varied reading and writing strategies. Students will become lifelong learners by continuing to read, continuing to write, and continuing to learn.

English 10

Our tenth grade team strives to be the best teachers we can possibly be. We are committed to giving our students a well-rounded and engaging English experience. This year we are very excited to be implementing the CommonLit 360 curriculum. This curriculum focuses on reading complex texts, analysis, argumentative, and narrative writing, speaking and listening skills, and much more. We feel that this curriculum will help our students become better readers and writers and prepare them for their future. We are constantly collaborating to make English an enjoyable and memorable experience.

English 11

As a collaborative team, we focus on developing teaching practices and strategies that meet the needs of all our students, ensuring each of them have a positive, student-centered learning experience in our classrooms. We care about our students as individuals and see the potential in each of them to master Utah's core learning standards. We are passionate about giving students real-world experiences within the classroom and strive to build literacy, writing, speaking, and listening skill sets that will help students achieve success in high school, higher education, and future careers.

English 12

The vision of the English 12 team is to align our lessons and planning with the standards, while ensuring that the reading, writing, thinking, and communication skills being taught have meaning and life application for whatever the student pursues after graduation. We strive to make our learning environment a safe and respectful space where students can voice their thoughts and where engaging collaboration can occur. We truly care about our students and take great pride in helping them navigate their last English classes in high school!

Student Center

Chemistry

The Chemistry team has been dedicated to enhancing the educational experience by emphasizing hands-on science and expanding the curriculum to include advanced concepts. This year, we implemented a series of interactive lab sessions that allow students to engage directly with the material, fostering a deeper understanding of complex chemical processes. Additionally, our curriculum development efforts have included integrating higher-level chemistry topics and fleshing out our AP and CE courses, ensuring that our students are well-prepared for future academic and professional pursuits in the sciences.

Earth Science

Biology

The biology team at Cedar Valley is hard at work providing high quality instruction and guiding our students to meet high expectations. We approach every essential standard with rigor and meet our students where they are at by providing the necessary support and accommodations to meet the rigorous standards. As we continue to learn about our students and how to best support them, we collaborate within our school team and the district to make sure our students are achieving proficiency of the essential standards. Our curriculum encompasses all 3 dimensions of the NGSS-based Utah SEEd standards and we push our students to really think like scientists through inquiry and hands-on experiments. Students practice literacy through vocabulary and reading-focused activities and learn how to respectfully collaborate with their peers. WE continue to strive for excellence as educators by setting high standards for ourselves and putting forth our best effort through continuing education learning and professional development science opportunities.

Health

Our Health Team is focused on creating a unified program of health and safety for all students. We strive to educate students with the same day to day standards and objectives, so that students across the department can interact and engage one with another with the learned material. Our unified program strives to enable all students to develop skills, abilities, and scenarios that will enable them to make healthy decisions for a lifetime.

CTE

As Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers, we are dedicated to preparing students for academic and career success. Through hands-on learning, internships, and mentorship, students develop hard and soft skills. CTE programs connect students to postsecondary opportunities, allowing them to earn college credits while still in high school. With valuable work-based learning experiences, students build marketable skills and can earn industry-recognized certifications that open doors to career success.

Visual Arts

Our art department is dedicated to equipping students with the essential knowledge, skills, and perspectives they need to create art that reflects both present experiences and future aspirations. Through creative processes, design principles, and objective analysis of perception, students develop a balanced, personal approach to artistic expression that connects deeply with their life experiences and visions for the future.

SEC I Math

Our secondary Math 1 team helps students bridge the gap between middle school mathematics and the high school level. We are working on finding the balance between student accountability and appropriate teacher support. We have come together to build a cohesive sequence of knowledge, skills, and dispositions that will set our students up for success in Secondary Math 2 and beyond. We are building note taking skills, study habits, and deeper thinking in solving problems.

SEC II Math

Our Secondary Math 2 team is helping all students in their classes to reach mastery of essential based standards and continue to bridge the gap in mathematics from the middle school level to the high school level. We are working on finding the balance between student accountability and appropriate teacher support. We have come together to build a cohesive sequence of knowledge, skills, and dispositions that will set our students up for success in Secondary Math 3 and beyond. We are building note taking skills, study habits, retention, and deeper thinking in solving problems.

SEC III Math

Our Secondary Math 3 team is helping those in our classes prepare for college and career readiness. We are working on finding the balance between student accountability and appropriate teacher support. We have come together to build a cohesive sequence of knowledge, skills, and dispositions that will set our students up for success in Math 1010, Math 1050, and beyond. We are building note taking skills, study habits, and deeper thinking in solving problems.

Math 1010/1050

Our goal is to help students earn college math credit while working toward high school graduation. We encourage students to make conceptual connections and apply learned mathematics to real world scenarios. Math 1010/1050 promotes critical thinking and problem solving, which strengthens student performance in many areas outside of mathematics. We work together to ensure equitable education and access to all students.

World Language

In today’s global community, competence in more than one language is an essential part of communication and cultural understanding. The study of another language not only provides individuals with the ability to express thoughts and ideas for their own purposes but also gives them access to perspectives and knowledge that are only available through the language and culture. It is our goal to help our students’ obtain the necessary skills to be successful in Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening and Signing so they can become competent global citizens buy applying their knowledge and skills beyond the classroom.

Resource Math

The Special Education Math Team is focused on ensuring that our students are given the maximum potential to develop the required mathematical knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to master the essential math standards in their curriculum by leveraging specialized instruction, classroom accommodations, and collaborative teaching strategies.

Resource English

The ELA team works to build reading and writing proficiency for our students. As a collaborative team, we developed benchmarks to measure progress. We are working to build skills that will transfer to all content areas, allowing our students to access more rigorous and complex texts. We are striving to build a love of reading for our students.

We also work to instill the students to not only believe in themselves but to lift up others. We do this by emulating compassion towards every student, parent, co-worker, and individual around. We don’t just believe that “All means all”, we express it in our actions and words in an effort to drive student success, and aim for excellence.

Life Skills

The Life Skills unit at CVHS has worked hard to create a curriculum based off of the essential elements. We have spent a lot of time creating common lessons and assessments. This helps ensure that all of the life skills students across the three classes are getting the same curriculum. During the first semester, we worked on building social relationships across the three life skills classes and with peer tutors. The life skills students participated in school wide activities like attending Homecoming in October, and look forward to attending Prom in April. In November, the life skills unit hosted a Friendsgiving dinner. During the second semester, we plan on doing an awesome fundraiser to bring awareness to "Spread the Word to End the Word." The life skills students will be attending first and second lunch to participate in "Spreading the Word" to their peers about the importance of inclusion. We feel like we are the luckiest three teachers in the school to get to spend time with these 35 amazing life skills students and 100's of peer tutors.

PE

We are passionate about giving our students a real world experience within our classrooms. Our classrooms consist of lesson plans that include literacy and grammar skill sets that will help students be more successful in school, their future education, and any future careers. We care about our students and individuals and see the potential in each of them to master the core learning standards. Our focus is the development of practices that meet all students’ needs to ensure they do not slip through the cracks, giving them a cohesive and student-centered learning experience in high school.
