PRINCIPAL’S COLUMN

Anzac Day

I would like to acknowledge our School Captain Team – Ava Dixon, Angus Jones, Santi Lopez and Anthony Lee Carlos for their efforts in representing our school at the Kingscliff Dawn Service, and the later services conducted at Pottsville and again at Kingscliff. In particular, both Angus and Ava spoke very well in delivering the keynote speeches at the Kingscliff Dawn Service and at Pottsville.

Thanks to those students who marched with us during the street parades preceding the above services. Thanks also to Ms Penman for her coordination of the School Captains and liaison with both the Kingscliff and Pottsville RSL Sub Branches, and to Ms Levi and Mr Walker for their efforts in setting up the PA system for the Kingscliff Dawn Service.

Staff Development Day

Like all schools across the state, our teachers spent last Monday working on the implementation of new syllabus documents across all subject areas, as well as research based approaches to curriculum delivery aligned with the work we have already been doing on the eight modes of learning. These modes of learning will also be a focus during Homeroom lessons starting this week.

Lake Keepit Camps Years 8 – 10

After the success of last year’s camp for Year 10 at Lake Keepit, near Tamworth, the above cohorts will shift their learning to this setting over the next three weeks. Starting with Year 8 this week, Year 9 next week and Year 10 in Week 4. Experience has shown these camps are invaluable in terms of building positive relationships among our students, and with their teachers. This, in turn, builds a more positive connection with learning at school.

Many thanks to those teachers giving up time with their own families in order to make these camps run, beginning with Mr Borg, Ms Hawkey and the Year 8 team this week.

Combined Coastal Learning Community Staff Meeting

Our ongoing collaboration with our colleagues in Pottsville Beach Public School, Bogangar Public School, Kingscliff Public School and Cudgen Public School will continue with our next combined Staff Meeting at Bogangar Public School next Wednesday afternoon.

Based on teacher advice from our combined Staff development day last term, we will be building connections that will allow Stage 3 (Years 5 and 6) teachers to work more closely with Stage 4 (Years 7 and 8) teachers. The focus will be on consistent classroom practice across our schools along with a greater focus on ensuring knowledge of all of our students is retained and further developed during their transition from Primary to High School.

Aboriginal Community Meeting

This is set for Wednesday 15 May 2024 from 5:30 in our Library - all are welcome.

Lockdown Drill

Our next scheduled drill for emergency procedures, in this case a 'lockdown’, is set for Thursday 16 May. It is important that our students and staff remain well briefed on what to do in the unlikely event of an emergency.

Wishing all of our school community a great week.

Walk Safely to School Day will be held on Friday 10 May 2024.

This year is the 25th year of National Walk Safely to School Day, which is coinciding with National Road Safety Week - 5-12 May 2024

This day is a great opportunity for families to walk to school together and have conversations about road safety, focussing on the key road safety messages.

Here are some tips to help make walking to school a regular part of your routine:

Plan your route: Take some time to plan the safest and most convenient route to walk to school. Consider pedestrian crossings, footpaths, and traffic lights.

Set a schedule: Decide on the days and times you'll walk to school each week. Consistency is key to forming a new habit. Try to stick to your schedule as much as possible.

NORTH COAST U15 GIRLS AFL

Congratulations to Mia Philip, Summer Taylor, Mila Opsenica, Arli Tapsall-Stallan, Siena Hoopmann and Macey France who represented North Coast and competed in the inaugural NSWCHS Girls AFL Championship down in Albury last week.

The girls played outstanding and displayed incredible sportsmanship throughout the tournament. North Coast finished in 4th place overall. A further congratulations to Macey who was also named as North Coast’s most valuable player and selected in the NSWCHS team.

Well done girls and good luck Macey at the next tournament!

Big Picture

Kingscliff Fire Station opened its doors for our Big Picture students this week.

Students were extremely lucky to meet our local Fire Fighters and to learn all about what's involved in becoming a Fire Fighter and the sacrifices the staff make when 'on-call'.

The knowledge and expertise that was shared opened the eyes of all our students to a potential interest they may have never considered before. Students asked curious questions, explored the equipment and had fun trying on the heavy protective equipment, feeling the pressure of the fire hose and seeing the inside of a fire truck.

Thank you to the team at Kingscliff Fire Station for providing this unique Leaving to Learn experience to our Big Picture students. It was truly a day to remember!

If you would like to know more the Kingscliff Fire Station are having an open day on Saturday 11 May 10am-2pm.

Administration Updates

Updating contact details – are your contact details up to date?

Sometimes we will need to contact you, including on the day that your child is absent if you haven’t notified the school with a reason for your child being away.

If your contact details are out of date or if you’re not sure, please contact the Front Office staff so we can update our records and can contact you quickly when we need to.

Please include parent/carers name, address, phone numbers, email address and emergency contact details. Please remember to contact the school if any of these details or your circumstances change.

Student Sickness

If you child is feeling unwell, please keep them home until they are well enough to return to school. Keeping sick students home is crucial to safeguarding the health of our entire school community.

When students are unwell, they risk spreading illness to their classmates and teachers. We want to minimise the spread of terms and create a healthier environment for everyone in our school.

Thank you.

Parking

We have been informed by Tweed Shire Council about community concerns regarding parking in the school pickup/drop-off zone at the end of Oxford Street. To address this, Parking Officers will now be monitoring the area.

Please note that parking in this zone is prohibited on school days between 8:00am - 9:30am and 2:30pm - 4:00pm. Violating these regulations may result in a fine of $215.00 and 2 demerit points.

Thank you for your cooperation in ensuring the safety and efficiency of our school's traffic flow.
