Alumni Spotlight

Alexandra Rodriguez

My name is Alexandra Rodriguez, and I’m a proud first-generation college student who began my educational journey at Porterville College. I’ve always had a passion for working with children and making a difference in my community, which led me to pursue a career in education. During my time at Porterville College, I was part of the California Mini-Corps program, which gave me valuable hands-on experience working with students in local classrooms.

The Education Careers program at Porterville College played a huge role in shaping my path. The support I received, especially from the amazing counselor in the program, helped me stay focused, confident, and excited about my future. Thanks to that guidance and preparation, I successfully transferred to Fresno State, where I’m now part of the ITEP (Integrated Teacher Education Program), working toward my bachelor’s degree and teaching credential.

To future students: Don’t be afraid to dream big and ask for help when you need it. The resources and people at Porterville College truly want to see you succeedtake advantage of every opportunity. Your journey may not always be easy, but it will be worth it.

Armando Oseguera

I graduated from Monache High School in 2006. I attended Porterville College and earned an A.A. in Social Science, as I wasn’t sure about a career path but knew I eventually wanted to transfer to a university. I went on to CSU Fresno, where I earned a B.S. in Criminology.

After college, I worked for Tulare County Probation. In my third year there, I decided to go back to school and, after some thought and research, chose to pursue a degree in School Counseling. I earned a Master’s in Educational Counseling and a Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) credential through National University. I interned at Monache and Strathmore High Schools and was fortunate to be hired as a school counselor at Strathmore when I graduated.

Three years into counseling, I decided to pursue an administrative credential and returned to National University. I completed a Master’s in Educational Administration and a Preliminary Administrative Services Credential, which helped me move into my current role as Dean of Counseling at Strathmore High School. I’m currently in the process of clearing my administrative credential.

Description of Current Role

In my role as Dean of Counseling, I oversee the counseling department and work directly with students to provide academic and social-emotional counseling.

I collaborate closely with the Principal and Vice Principal to help manage the school, with a focus on academics and student services, while ensuring our work aligns with district goals and expectations. I create the master schedule, oversee student progress in the EAT Pathway, and support students in their college and career preparedness.

I also support teachers in addressing student academic and social-emotional needs, and I work with parents when they have concerns about their child’s progress or well-being. The ultimate goal of my department is to help students prepare for life after high school, whether that’s college, career, or other opportunities.

Advice for Aspiring Educators

Education is a challenging but incredibly rewarding profession. As educators, we have the opportunity to make a lasting impact on students’ lives. You’ll work with students whose life experiences may be very different from what you expect, and that can sometimes bring challenges. But every student deserves your attention, support, and care — and meeting them where they are can be one of the most meaningful and fulfilling parts of the job.

Career-wise, treat every interaction as a chance to make a positive impression. Pair that with a positive attitude, an open mind, flexibility, and a strong work ethic. These qualities will serve you well and help open doors as you build your career in education
