Canbury School Newsletter 17th November 2023. ISSUE 315

Dear Families, Friends, Students and Staff.

How on earth have we arrived at Friday? It seems like five minutes ago that I was saying this!

As always it's been a busy week at Canbury. Miss O'Riordan is making a giant turkey, Mr Brinkmanis is planning a trip to Kew Gardens, Ms Boyle is gently coaching her Maths Mocks students to keep on working hard and Mr Barnes has been helping everyone run off their energy running cross country. You name it, we've been doing it.

It was lovely to see such a great turn out from students and parents/carers on Wednesday at our Options Evening. Meeting in person is something I certainly took for granted pre-pandemic. Now I really do appreciate it, and I feel you all did too.

We had a lovely day today supporting BBC Children in Need. It's always good to think about others and look outwards rather than inwards. Thank you to everyone who supported this fundraising initiative.

All that remains for me to say is enjoy the weekend, and a gentle reminder that next Tuesday all students and staff will be having their photos taken. I can't wait to see everyone arrive in school super smart and with all the correct uniform!

Best wishes

Mrs Rich.

Pacman to the rescue!

Year 7 students continued their recent focus on finding their way around maps this week (you just never know when you might still need one).

Retro help from Pacman in Geography. Mr McGregor showing his age!

They've been looking at four figure grid references and started to look at six figure ones too. As you can see, they had some help with this in the form of Pacman - look how colourful they all are! Great work Year 7.

Cross Country Heroes.

We sent four students to compete at District Cross Country on Thursday this week at Tiffin School, writes Mr Barnes. Nico and Lloyd competed in the Junior Boys event and Matt and Hugo ran in the Intermediate Boys event. All the boys did fantastically well, with all of them finishing in the top half of their fields. Hugo and Matt came 16 and 18 respectively out of 45 runners, and Lloyd and Nico came 15 and 25 in a huge field of 55 runners.

Off they go - L-R: Lloyd, Hugo, Nico and Matt.

Well done to our runners, they really gave it their all - as you can tell from the grimaces on their faces above!

Back from their endeavours - L-R: Matt, Lloyd, Nico and Hugo.

Sixth Formers preparing for the next stage.

All the 6th From are really excited about attending the Surrey Festival of Skills next week. The festival focuses on careers education. The students will have the opportunity to meet business, further education colleges and apprenticeship providers. We're looking forward to hearing all about it on their return.

Options, options - so many to consider.

We had an excellent Options Evening event on Wednesday. It was great to see all of the Year 9 parents and carers come along to find out about and discuss GCSE options. Thank you for your attendance.

Toothpaste, tea bags and maybe some chocolate??

With the nights drawing in, and the temperature finally dropping, we are turning our thoughts to how we can help others. Next Friday we will be launching our monthly collection for Kingston Food Bank. We are asking students and staff to bring in one (or more) items of food, or other products, suitable for donating to our local foodbank. We appreciate that everyone is feeling the pinch, so please do not feel under pressure to donate. However all items will be gratefully received and will be put to excellent use.

We will be collecting all items at our Friday assembly. Suitable items include toothpaste, biscuits, baked beans, rice, toiletries, breakfast cereals and stock cubes. These are just suggestions.

Children in Need

Thank you to everyone who donated to our Children in Need day today. Students enjoyed wearing their own clothes to school. We had to search out the 'spotty accessories' which were a little thin on the ground - but we did see some! At the time of writing we had raised a heart-warming £88. There's still time to donate if you wish. Here's the link Thank you.

Altogether now - well done to our Children in Need supporters. Thank you all.

Be kind - what does that actually look like?

We hear the term 'be kind' so often now that it's easy to pay it no attention whatsoever. So this week we tried to be mindfully kind, and really made an effort to put this idea into practice. Students were given 'caught being kind' slips where appropriate - something as simple as opening a door for people, asking how they were or checking in on a friend were all rewarded. In addition students learned about the 'Science of Kindness' in the Wellbeing lessons. Did you know there are scientifically proven benefits of being kind? Kindness increases: energy, lifespan, levels of serotonin and oxytocin. It also decreases stress, anxiety and even blood pressure! So really, what's not to love?

Layla shows her 'caught being kind' slip. Well done you!

Now all we need to do is keep up the good work and play a spot of kindess bingo - see below. Alternatively, head over to the Random Acts of Kindness website for more ideas.

Games timetable - until December 2023.
