Welcome to the inaugural Virginia Tech Wind Festival! During this two day residency, you will have the opportunity to work with internationally respected guest artists, take part in masterclasses, and attend chamber music performances that highlight both tradition and innovation. The woodwind world is rapidly evolving, and I encourage you to ask questions, experiment boldly, share ideas with your colleagues, and reflect on your music making in new ways. Artist-clinician Profile

Julianna Eidle is an Illinois-based performer, organizer, and educator. In fall 2024, Eidle was appointed Instructor of Flute at Western Illinois University. Julianna holds the Second Flute/Piccolo chair with Opera in the Ozarks (Eureka Springs, Arkansas) and performs with orchestras throughout the Midwest, including Opera Project Columbus, the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, Springfield Symphony Orchestra, Butler Philharmonic Orchestra, Richmond Symphony Orchestra, and Columbus Indiana Philharmonic. She frequently collaborates with the Linton Chamber Music Series and Concert:Nova, presenting diverse, community-focused programs. A passionate collaborator, Julianna is Artistic Director of Cincinnati New Music, a resident Performing Artist with the Contemporary Art Music Project in Tampa, FL, and Co-Director of New Downbeat, a Cincinnati chamber ensemble rooted in intersectional feminism. An advocate for new music, Julianna has premiered over 50 works for solo flute and ensemble and performed at the BMI Composer Awards, SHE: Festival of Women in Music, Society of Composers, Inc. Student National Conference, and the Midwest Composers Symposium. In 2021, Julianna received a GSG Research Fellowship for Interdisciplinary and Diverse Study in support of her recent commissioning project, Sadie’s Story, which explores the complicated global conditions of today’s emi/immigration crisis. An active educator, Julianna maintains a busy teaching schedule working with students at WIU and through her private studio. She previously taught at the University of Cincinnati, Tallant Music Studio, and Willis Music. She has presented classes on flute, piccolo, and chamber music throughout the Midwest and Southeastern US. Julianna teaches the foundations of healthy playing, encouraging each student to express their unique voice. With interests in artistic wholeness, Julianna has pursued studies in Deep Listening, Yoga Teacher Certification, and The Well’s My True SELF program. Julianna has appeared at festivals throughout North America and Europe. In 2019, she attended the Galway Flute Festival in Weggis, Switzerland on full scholarship. Julianna has participated in the National Music Festival, SPLICE Institute, Domaine Forget International Music Festival (Canada) with Emanuel Pahud, and the Orford Music Academy (Canada) with Robert Langevin. Additionally, she has performed in masterclasses with Stefán Höskuldsson, Kersten McCall, Barthold Kuijken, Jeffrey Khaner, Emma Gerstein, and Todd Skitch. Julianna holds degrees from Indiana University (BM and Performer Diploma) and the University of Cincinnati (MM,) where she is currently pursuing her DMA. Her primary teachers include Demarre McGill, Thomas Robertello, Kathryn Lukas, and Christina Smith.

Artist-Clinician Profile

Dr. Gloria Inés Orozco Dorado is a Colombian clarinetist who has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in the United States, Colombia, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Ireland. In 2024, she was awarded First Prize in the International Clarinet Association’s Research Competition for her project Ritmos de mi Tierra (Rhythms of My Land), and Second Prize in the Orchestral Audition Competition at ClarinetFest® in Dublin, Ireland. Focusing on the preservation and dissemination of the cultural and musical heritage of Caloto, Cauca, Colombia, Ritmos de mi Tierra explores a legacy shaped by Indigenous, Afro-Colombian, and Mestizo traditions through archival research, ethnomusicological fieldwork, and artistic collaboration, including the commissioning of new works. The project culminated in a globally distributed album released by SoundSet Recordings in November 2024, enriching the clarinet repertoire and serving as a pedagogical resource that promotes Colombian musical traditions. Dr. Orozco Dorado has appeared as a concerto soloist with the Arizona Symphony Orchestra, the Northeastern Illinois University Orchestra, and the Chicago Clarinet Ensemble. Her orchestral and chamber music experience includes performances with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, the Arizona Wind Quintet, and the World Youth Wind Orchestra Project. She is a founding member of Q’iru Duet and Ensemble, dedicated to the performance and dissemination of Latin American music, with appearances at ClarinetFest® in Texas (2025), Ireland (2024), Denver (2023), and Reno (2022). She also co-founded ClarInés Cuarteto de Clarinetes, winners of the 2015 Luis Ángel Arango National Competition hosted by the Colombian Republican Bank. Since 2016, Dr. Orozco Dorado has led Soplan Vientos de Paz (Winds of Peace Are Blowing), a peace-centered social impact project she founded to provide high-quality clarinet education to children and youth in Cauca, Colombia, one of the regions most deeply affected by armed conflict, economic instability, and limited access to educational resources. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Clarinet Performance with a minor in Electroacoustic Music and Sound Production from the University of Arizona. She earned two Master of Music degrees in Clarinet Performance and Music Theory & Composition from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, as well as a Master of Arts in Applied Pedagogy (Clarinet) from Northeastern Illinois University. She completed her undergraduate studies with a Bachelor of Music in Clarinet Performance from Universidad del Cauca in Colombia. Her main clarinet professors include Drs. Jackie Glazier, Eric Mandat, Rose Sperrazza, and Andrés Ramírez Villarraga. Dr. Orozco Dorado’s work integrates performance, education, and community engagement, with a strong focus on access to music and intercultural collaboration.

Artist-Clinician Profile

Dr. Paul Chinen is currently the Assistant Professor of Oboe at Western Illinois University and Oboist in the resident Woodwind Quintet, the Camerata Winds. He also holds the position of 2nd oboe with Orchestra Iowa in Cedar Rapids. Prior to moving to Macomb, Paul was the Principal Oboe of the Great Falls Symphony and Oboist in the Chinook Winds Woodwind Quintet. Previous positions include Associate Principal Oboe with the Helena Symphony and 2nd Oboe/ English Horn in the Florida Grand Opera and Palm Beach Symphony. Paul has also performed with the Billings Symphony Orchestra, Greenville Symphony, Miami City Ballet, Fairfax Symphony, American Festival Pops Orchestra, Miami Symphony, South Florida Symphony, and New World Symphony. As a sought-after soloist, Paul gave the world premiere of Robert W. Smith's Oboe Concerto, "Cosmic Harmonies," in February 2023 with the WIU Wind Ensemble and was the featured guest soloist with the South East Iowa Symphony performing Jean Françaix’s "Flower Clock" concerto. He can be heard playing Principal Oboe on two NAXOS albums, most recently "Gottsch; Sunset/Princess Yurievskaya, South Florida Symphony" and "Gershwin, Tower, Piston, Harbison; Orchestral Works, National Orchestral Institute Philharmonic." Originally from Honolulu, HI, Paul received his Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Miami Frost School of Music, where he was a graduate teaching assistant and fellow in the Henry Mancini Institute. Previous degrees include a Master of Music from the Lynn Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor of Music from George Mason University, where he also studied Classical Saxophone. During the summer months, Paul has performed across the country and abroad as part of numerous music festivals, including the Kent Blossom Music Festival, National Orchestral Institute, Hot Springs Music Festival, Vancouver Summer Orchestra Institute at Whistler, Talis Music Festival, and various others. He has previously served as faculty at the Pacific Music Institute in Honolulu, HI, and the Judith Lapple Summer Woodwind Camp in Fairfax, Virginia.

Artist-Clinician Profile

Dr. Andrea C. Baker serves as Assistant Professor of Bassoon at Western Illinois University, where she performs with the Camerata Woodwind Quintet and Camerata Nova Contemporary Woodwind Quintet. Known for her innovative approach to chamber music, Dr. Baker champions the creation and performance of new repertoire, commissioning works from contemporary composers. She is principal bassoonist with Opera in the Ozarks and second bassoonist with the Richmond Symphony in Indiana. A dedicated educator, Dr. Baker is committed to fostering artistry and accessibility in her students. At Western Illinois University, she leads an engaging studio environment focused on developing technical excellence, musicality, and professional skills. Her efforts in recruitment and mentorship have bolstered student success and contributed to a thriving woodwind program. Dr. Baker’s versatility extends to her chamber music collaborations, including Some Light Reeding, a clarinet and bassoon duo dedicated to improving equity among developing woodwind students, and Friends in Low Places, a quartet blending bassoons and bass clarinets, which recently premiered Brian Nabors' Synergy through an International Double Reed Society commissioning grant. Her work as a chamber musician has taken her to stages worldwide, including residencies at the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival in South Africa and performances at the Australasian Double Reed Society Conference in Melbourne, Australia. As a soloist, Dr. Baker won the 2021 University of Cincinnati Wind Concerto Competition and the 2017 Boston Woodwind Society Sherman Walt Merit Solo Competition. Her recent orchestral engagements include performances with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Asheville Symphony Orchestra, Alabama Symphony, and Chattanooga Symphony, among others. Dr. Baker holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, a Master of Music from New England Conservatory, and a Bachelor of Music from Penn State University. Her principal mentors include William Winstead, Martin Garcia, Christopher Sales, Richard Svoboda, Daryl Durran, and Shirley Curtiss.

Artist-Clinician Profile

Throughout his career, Charlie Chadwell has championed a variety of musical mediums and styles, and his performances have taken him across the U.S., to England, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, and China. Well-versed in both classical and jazz, he has regularly participated in saxophone quartets and large ensembles, jazz bands, jazz combos and new music ensembles at Western Illinois University, Michigan State University, Oklahoma State University, and The University of Texas at Austin. He’s also performed with the Austin Symphony Orchestra, the San Antonio Symphony, and the Lansing Symphony, in addition to performing as a concerto soloist with the UT Symphony Orchestra and Oklahoma State Symphony Orchestra. An advocate of new music, Chadwell regularly commissions new works for the saxophone. Recently Chadwell worked with WIU Director of Bands Mike Fansler to put together a consortium to commission composer Jim Stephenson to write a concerto for saxophone and wind ensemble. Twelve other saxophonists and wind ensembles collaborated on the commission, and the world premiere of Code of Conduct took place in May 2023. Additionally, last fall Chadwell worked with composer Jim Caldwell to create a new work for saxophone and electronics, Far from the Tree, which was accepted and premiered at the 2023 Electronic Music Midwest festival. Last spring he also premiered two commissions for saxophone trio at the 2023 Biennial North American Saxophone Alliance: Citrus by Lynnsey Lambrecht and Appendages by Keaton Garrett. At the 2020 National NASA Conference Chadwell premiered Economic Shorts by Spencer Arias for saxophone duo, and Cathedral of Particles for saxophone duo and electronics, by Kakia Gkoudina. In July of 2020, Chadwell collaborated with composer Keaton Garrett and premiered Wandering, a work for solo tenor saxophone, which was performed remotely for the New Music On the Point’s 10th Anniversary Commissioning Project. Chadwell has enjoyed participation in numerous award-winning chamber ensembles, from winning second place at the 2015 MTNA National Chamber Music competition with the Indarra Saxophone Quartet, to appearing as a finalist and semi-finalist in the 2018 and 2020 NASA Saxophone Quartet competitions respectively, with the Leaq and Sycamore saxophone quartets. A native of Austin, Texas, Charlie has taught extensively in the central Texas area as a private lesson and master class teacher, as well as a band clinician. He holds a BM in Music Education degree from The University of Texas at Austin with a Performance Certificate, where he studied with Harvey Pittel and Stephen Page. He also holds a MM in Saxophone Performance from Oklahoma State University, where he studied with Jeffrey Loeffert and Tommy Poole. Most recently, he finished a MM in Music Theory and a DMA in Saxophone Performance from Michigan State University, where he studied with Joe Lulloff.
