Course Descriptions

Beginning Band

Course Description: Students in Beginning Band will learn the basics of how to play woodwind, brass, or percussion instruments as well as learning the basics of reading music and playing alone and within an instrumental ensemble. (This class requires attendance at after-school rehearsals and performances. It also requires the payment of band dues to cover students' Concert attire.)

Course Materials: Instrument and required accessories (mouthpiece, reed, ligature, drumsticks/mallets, music binder, clear sheet protectors.

Intermediate Band

Course Description: Students in Intermediate Band will expound upon the fundamentals learned in beginning band in playing woodwind, brass, or percussion instruments as well as learning more advanced techniques for reading music, playing alone, and playing within an instrumental ensemble. These students will perform several different styles of challenging musical literature. (This class requires attendance at after-school rehearsals and performances. It also requires the payment of band dues to cover students' Concert attire.)

Course Materials: Instrument and applicable accessories (mouthpiece, reed, ligature, drumsticks/mallets, valve oil, slide grease, cork grease, etc.), music binder, clear sheet protectors.

Beginning Instrumental Ensemble (Percussion Class)

Course Description: Students in the Beginning Instrumental Ensemble class will learn strictly about percussion instruments (all drums, cymbals, xylophone, marimba, tambourine, etc.). This class will focus on making well-rounded percussionists out of our students and helping them to become proficient in the various techniques used in playing all of the instruments in the percussion family. Students will also learn how to read music, play alone, and play within a musical ensemble.

Course Materials: Applicable accessories for percussion instruments (snare drumsticks, hard rubber mallets, soft yarn mallets, practice pad), music binder, clear sheet protectors. This class requires the payment of dues ot cover students' Concert attire. Students who are in Beginning Band or Intermediate Band and have already paid for their Concert attire WILL NOT have to pay twice.

Beginning Orchestra I

Provides opportunities to develop performance skills and precision on orchestral stringed instruments. Emphasizes performance and production, analysis and theoretical studies, historical and cultural contributions and influences, creative aspects of music and appreciation of music. Organizes objectives for self-paced progress. Stresses individual progress and ensemble experiences.

Beginning Orchestra II

Enhances level-one skills and provides further opportunities to develop performance skills and precision on orchestral stringed instruments. Covers performance and production, analysis and theoretical studies, historical and cultural contributions and influences, creative aspects of music and appreciation of music. Stresses self-paced progress and ensemble experiences.

Intermediate Orchestra I

Provides opportunities for intermediate-level performers to increase performance skills and precision on orchestral stringed instruments. Covers performance and production, analysis and theoretical studies, historical and cultural contributions and influences, creative aspects of music and appreciation of music. Organizes objectives for self-paced progress through all four levels. Stresses individual progress and group experiences.

Intermediate Orchestra II
