Berry College Nursing Our life-changing journey to Kenya - Summer 2024

"This journey is a testament to the power of caring, the importance of service and the mutual exchange of knowledge and culture."

— Carolyn Reilly, Director of Nursing

Six Days of Clinical Experience

In the summer of 2024, the Berry College nursing students traveled to Kenya in East Africa for their study abroad program — a once-in-a-lifetime experience. They spent six days taking their skills from the training lab and applying them to real-world treatment situations.

The students served at a two-day free clinic, working with some of the most vulnerable and in-need patients. During this humbling experience, these caring and selfless individuals stepped into this hands-on test to learn new practices and processes, to engage with patients and to build their confidence.

While assisting the medical staff at the Bondo County Hospital, Madiany Subcounty Hospital and Kijabi Missionary Hospital, the students were able to support and treat those in critical need. Many felt thankful for the opportunity to give and serve alongside the incredible staff.

Three Nursing school Visits

It's challenging for nursing students to find a strong support system and others who understand the physical and emotional toll of the profession. However, Aga Khan University, Kijabi School of Nursing and Bondo Regional School of Nursing offered compassion, insight and understanding while sharing their practices, training and resources with the students. They were enthusiastic and ready to interact with and teach the Berry students.

Three days immersed in culture

The students spent three days in rural Kenya, learning about the Luo and Masai tribes and cultures. These tribes have a rich history, and the people, food and lifestyle surpassed all expectations. Many students fell in love with the people and deepened their love of the profession.

Two days on safari

This unparalleled experience — including two days of enjoyment and relaxation — bonded this group of nursing students and will stay with them throughout their careers.

"This has been a really great opportunity to work with people that are patient and that really want your care. They are willing to work alongside you as you improve. I know that I have left the clinic and this hospital feeling way more confident in a wide variety of skills."

— Michaela D.

"Walking away from this trip, going into my senior year of nursing, I feel really confident in the fact that I'm not just in nursing school, but I'm going to be a nurse one day, and I'm going to be a good nurse too."

— Sadie P.

"On this trip we were able to use our head, heart and hands to truly embody the vision of Martha Berry like never before. We were able to minister unto and not be ministered to in a really special way."
