Located in Atlanta, Georgia, East Lake Golf Club is the city's oldest course, established in 1904 and home to the legendary Bobby Jones. Originally designed by Tom Bendelow, it was revamped by Donald Ross in 1913 and modernized by Reece Jones in 1994. The 7,346-yard, par 70 course is known for its serene parkland layout and hosts the PGA Tour Championship, where Patrick Cantlay claimed the title in 2021. The 15th hole, a 209-yard par 3 with the first-ever island green, is a true challenge, demanding precision and nerve!
Colonel Bogey
Kenneth J. Alford (1881-1945)
arr. Andrew Glover
The interval of a descending minor third, seemingly basic to human communication, appears to be a factor in the composition of this march and also a reason for its innate appeal. Strolling on the Fort George golf course in Inverness, Scotland, one day in 1913, the composer reportedly heard the two-note interval whistled as a warning, and the result was a world-famous march with the familiar golf term "bogey" in its title.
In 1957 the lm the Bridge on the River Kwai revived interest in this World War I march, and the younger generation of soldiers (and bandsmen) sang the same bawdy words heard by Alford [the pseudonym of Frederick Ricketts] 30 years earlier. According to Lt. Col. F. Vivian Dunn, the composer "greatly deprecated this usage, but was resigned to it as he understood the cheerful fortitude of the British troops in the face of adversity in the war." Capitalizing on the popularity of the original march -- still among the world's most popular -- Rickets later arranged a potpourri of several of his marches using the title Colonel Bogey on Parade.
Our program entitled “Around Town” celebrates several legendary locations around out great city. Atlanta’s East Lake Golf Club is the oldest golf course in Atlanta and home of the PGA Tour Championship. This legendary course is on many lists as one of the best golf courses in Atlanta. With its ties in origin to golf, Colonel Bogey is programmed to represent East Lake and the vibrant golf community of Atlanta.

The Haunted Carousel (2014)
Erika Svanoe | b. 1976
Julianna Pinero, conductor
BA Young Band Composition Contest winner, 2014
"The Haunted Carousel" was conceived as a piece for band utilizing the sound of a theremin, an electronic instrument often used in old science ction and horror movies. The theremin part is designed to be performed live on an ampli ed iPad with the GarageBand application, but is doubled in other instruments.
One xture of the city is the SkyView wheel located at Centennial Olympic Park. This exciting attraction allows riders to see a panoramic view of the city, 20 stories above the ground. While this attraction is not haunted, the sounds of this work do evoke the images of a carousel. Perhaps the SkyView on the 31st of this month will feel more haunted...

Down a Country Lane (1926/1991)
AARON COPLAND | 1900-1990
ARR. MERLIN PATTERSON | 1921-2005
Rachel Breaux, conductor
On June 29, 1962, Life Magazine featured Aaron Copland's composition Down a Country Lane. The piece was commissioned by Life in hopes of making quality music available to the common pianist and student. The work was featured along with an article title "Our Bumper Crop of Beginning Piano Players". The article explains, "Down a Country Lane fills a musical gap: It is among the few modern pieces specially written for young piano students by a major composer." Copland is quoted in the article of saying "Even third-year students will have to practice before trying it in public." Copland then explains the title: "The music is descriptive only in an imaginative, not a literal sense. I didn't think of the title until the piece was finished -- Down a Country Lane just happened to fit its flowing quality."
Copland is very descriptive in his directions on how the piece should be played. The piece begins with instructions to play "gently flowing in a pastoral mood"; a brief midsection is slightly dissonant and to be played "a trifle faster"; and the ending returns to the previous lyrical mood. Down a Country Lane was orchestrated for inclusion in a youth orchestra series and premiered on November 20, 1965, by the London Junior Orchestra. The band arrangement was completed by Merlin Patterson in 1988. Patterson specialized in Copland transcriptions. Copland himself spoke of Patterson's excellent work upon the completion of Down a Country Lane, saying that he produced "a careful, sensitive, and most satisfying extension of the mood and content of the original."

Moon River (1961/2013)
HENRY MANCINI
ARR. MICHAEL BROWN | 1924-1994
Kate Alward, mezzo-soprano
This was used as Audrey Hepburn's theme song in the 1961 movie Breakfast at Tiffany's. Hepburn sings the song in the movie, but the version used on the soundtrack was an instrumental by Henry Mancini and his orchestra.
Moon River is a real river in Savannah, Georgia, where Mercer grew up. His home overlooked the river and he had fond memories of the place. At the time, the river was known as The Back River, but was renamed Moon River in honor of the song, and Johnny Mercer's home along the river became known as the Moon River House.
