This course will run as an AAQ which is a one A-Level equivalent. If government (DFE) advice on BTECs and V-Levels changes we will update students as soon as possible and try to offer the double and triple courses.
The AAQ (BTEC National) course in Applied Science course covers the fundamentals of science, working in the science industry, perceptions of science, scientific investigation and practical techniques. You will also study some other units which could include aspects of statistics, human physiology and anatomy, disease and infection, human regulation and reproduction, medical physics techniques, organic chemistry and inorganic chemistry.
Applied Science AAQ (Alternative Academic Qualification) is equivalent to 1 A-Level.
Additional Entry Requirements
- Grades 5-4 in GCSE Combined Science.
- GCSE Maths: 4
- GCSE English: 4
These requirements are in addition to the general entry requirements.Alternatively you could progress directly into a career within the scientific industry as a technician.
How will I be assessed?
This course has both internally and externally assessed components. Internally assessed units require students to:
- write up the findings of their own research
- use case studies to explore complex or unfamiliar situations
- carry out projects for which they have choice over the direction and outcomes
- demonstrate practical and technical skills using appropriate equipment, procedures and techniques.
These requirements of the course will be met through a variety of assignments which are assessed though presentations, practical tasks and by completing coursework tasks in controlled conditions. External assessment involves written examinations in scientific investigations, physics, biology and chemistry units.

The Applied Science AAQ is valued by employers and higher education providers. You can progress on to a wide range of degree programs at university. Possible degrees include radiography, biology, zoology, nursing, pharmacy and chemistry, science technician and many more.
