NIHR CRN East Midlands Research Forum for non-medical research delivery staff

The theme of the Forum is 'The Next Chapter: New Beginnings'. The agenda has now been finalised and you can find this below. It includes an opportunity to hear about the forthcoming changes within the Network as we transition to the new Regional Research Delivery Networks as well as other changes in the wider research system. There will also be an opportunity to hear from colleagues across the region about some successes delivering research in new settings.

Speakers

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network (CRN) supports patients, the public and health and care organisations across England to participate in high-quality research, thereby advancing knowledge and improving care. Dan is the Deputy Chief Operating Officer at Clinical Research Network East Midlands.

Dan has a degree in Business Management Studies and worked for an accountancy firm prior to moving into the NHS in 1996. With 25 years NHS experience, firstly as a qualified nurse, then as a Research Nurse, before moving onto Senior Research roles. Dan led on commercial research across the East Midlands region for over 10 years prior to this current post.

Since the start of her NIHR career as a Clinical Studies Officer in the former Mental Health Research Network Kaatje has worked in various roles across Local Clinical Research Networks and the CRN Coordinating Centre.

During this time she led on the development and implementation of various strategic programmes including the integration between the Local and Central Portfolio Management Systems and the expansion of CRN activity into wider community settings.

At present, Kaatje works part time as CRN Coordinating Centre Business Change Manager and part time as East Midlands Transition lead; working with University Hospitals Leicester as the host for the future Regional Research Delivery Network and staff and stakeholders across the East Midlands to ensure the RRDN is ready for service commencement in October 2024.

Goiz is the Industry Operations Manager for the NIHR CRN East Midlands. She joined the Network in 2015, following a career in Nursing working within intensive care in the NHS.

In her current role Goiz supports national and regional initiatives to help meet the research delivery needs of the life sciences industry. She is passionate about supporting innovative clinical research for all cutting-edge treatments and technologies and across all conditions, to ensure the UK remains a globally-leading destination for research investment and delivery, and to improve the lives of patients all over the UK and around the world.

I am a Senior Qualitative Advisor and member of the Senior Executive Group at the NIHR Research Support Service Hub hosted by the University of Leicester and Partners. I am also an Honorary Associate Professor in Anaesthesia & Critical Care at the University of Nottingham.

I currently lead the qualitative work streams of two International Vascular trials and my research in patient safety has focused on preventing error in the anaesthetic and critical care environment.

Having qualified as an Allied Health Professional in 1999, I have been involved in the delivery of research for the past 15 years, during this period I have worked in a variety of settings including Primary Care, Mental Health, Dementia and Forensics.

Currently I am the DDT regional lead for Nottingham managing a team of Research Nurse and Clinical Practitioners aiding the delivering of research in a variety of environments.

Roy Ward is a Research Inclusion Manager within the CRN, based in the National Coordinating Centre. Roy joined the CRNCC in 2021 and leads work to embed equality, diversity and inclusion in NIHR processes, systems and culture.

This has included work to promote diversity and inclusion within the CRN workforce and to improve inclusion and participation in health and care research, as well as pan-NIHR projects such as the creation of the NIHR's first ever staff network for LGBTQ+ staff and allies.

Prior to joining the NIHR, Roy worked within the charity sector and further & higher education on a variety of projects focused on equality.

Keith Tripp is a Business Executive, Trainer, Property Investor & has worked significantly with businesses that have multiple companies globally, to transform their organisations from fragmented portfolios of companies into internationally networked organisations with a single strategy.

Keith has over 25 years of experience in senior leadership, management of multinational private engineering companies, faith-based academic colleges, and non-profit institutions bringing vision, cultural change, insight and growth.

Jackie is married to Keith and together they have 6 children, and 14 grandchildren so has experienced and observed a wide range of parenting approaches.

Jackie has been involved in teaching primary aged children, 4 to 11 years old, for over 20 years which has given her a broad understanding of differing and sometimes very complex needs. However, fostering of two grandsons from January 2020, aged 5 and 12, brought a whole new dimension to parenting and understanding children’s needs.

Jackie’s passion is music, singing as a soloist, in a choir and leading worship and had been responsible for Music Coordination throughout the primary school. She has given voice coaching to many children and led school choirs, to great success, over many years.

Cath Burlton, [Senior Programme Manager], NIHR, supports the UK Vaccine Innovation Pathway (VIP) Programme Management Office (PMO). Having joined the PMO in summer 2023, she is dedicated to delivering the 2024 VIP plan alongside building relationships across the UK clinical research ecosystem.

Her background includes working in the medical charity sector delivering process change projects in complex and reactive operational environments. She has also led projects to improve the experience and service offered to its users.

I am the Learning & Development Manager and GCP Lead for the CRN East Midlands and have worked for the NIHR since 2010.

I have worked in delivering and supporting clinical research since 1998. I have held various roles such as Clinical Trial coordinator, Research Support Officer, Learning & Development Officer before becoming the Learning & development Manager.

Steph Kings-Jones has worked in research since 2008 and has held various research roles such as Research Administrator, Trial Coordinator and Clinical Studies Officer. I have worked as a Clinical Research Practitioner mainly in the field of Mental Health and Dementia across many settings including Prisons, Schools, Primary Care and Mental Health Units.

I have been an NIHR and GCP Facilitator since 2018 where I facilitated learning sessions such as Informed Consent, GCP, Next Steps and Principal Investigator Essentials. In 2022 I started a role as the Supra Network Training Manager in Health and Care Settings, working across East Midlands, West Midlands and East of England. In 2023, I started part-time as the NIHR GCP Subject Matter Expert and Learning Advisor working for the Coordinating Centre.

Emma works within the Science Research and Evidence Directorate at the Department of Health and Social Care. Her role includes leadership of the UK Clinical Research Recovery Resilience and Growth programme, implementing the recommendations of the O’Shaughnessy Review of commercial clinical trials, and other areas of policy which contribute to making the UK one of the best places in the world to design and deliver clinical research.

Emma is a participant in the Academy of Medical Sciences FLIER programme, has an MSc in People and Organisational Development from the Roffey Park Institute and previously led the creation and delivery of learning and workforce development programmes in the NIHR Clinical Research Network, including the NIHR’s Good Clinical Practice (GCP) programme.
