Congratulazioni Luca!
Luca has dedicated himself to studying Italian through correspondence in recent years. His efforts have culminated in receiving both the New South Wales and National Prizes for his outstanding submission in the Premio in Class short film competition, designed for high school students studying Italian.
The competition, open to students in Years 7 to 12, encouraged participants to create short films in Italian centred around the theme of "Italian and sustainability," with the freedom to choose any film genre. Luca elected to delve into how the Italian Slow Food movement, along with a return to locally sourced food, has impacted practices in both Italy and Australia. He masterfully presented his research in the form of a short film.
This achievement stands as a testament to Luca's dedication and talent. Both Luca and South Sydney High School received recognition in the Italian newspaper dated 19th October 2023 and Co.As.It. Facebook page.
Year 12 2024 Information Night
Whilst Year 12 are in the middle of their final HSC exams our Year 11 students have now started the HSC course. It is often said that the HSC is a marathon not a sprint. It is important that students start the course with the right attitude, including attending school every day, being on time and ready to give their best in every class. On Tuesday night Year 11 and their parents received information about the Year 12 requirements including illness and misadventure procedures.
Homework Club
The Homework Club is available to all students in Term 4. The Homework Club operates in the school library from 2:45 pm - 4:45 pm every Tuesday and is staffed by university students and one teacher from South Sydney High School. All the staff are able to cover most 7 - 12 subjects and provide individual and group help with specific subjects or general help with study and organisation.

Year 12 final week of school
Our Year 12 students are currently sitting their HSC Exams. Their last week of school was full of activities for students to bond and celebrate. Here’s what we got up to:
Staff vs Year 12 Netball, Soccer and Oztag
Some brave staff signed up for sports against the younger and fitter Year 12 students. The students were victorious in Netball and Oztag but were not skillful enough to take out the clean-sweep.
Monday: Community Service Projects
Group 1 assisted Ms Mattock to prepare for the upcoming Christmas and Careers Market. They arranged terrariums and cut fabric to be sewn into bucket hats.
Group 2 traveled to Our Big Kitchen in Bondi. OBK is an industrial kitchen that prepares meals for people in need in Sydney. Students had a masterclass for chopping vegetables and were quickly put to work. The vegetables we prepared were to be cooked into a casserole the following day and distributed to Rough Edges, a charity who provides support for people experiencing homelessness. Students also helped decorate cookies to accompany these meals. A small group assisted the Head Chef at OBK to prepare meals that were picked up by the Salvation Army. Students also had the opportunity to speak to the Salvation Army workers when they arrived and learn about the people these meals were going to help feed as well as learn about the history of OBK from its founder. It was a humbling experience for our students but also rewarding and left with full hearts knowing they had helped so many people.
Tuesday: Barbie and Ken fashion walk and water fight
Year 12 students flaunted their Barbie and Ken outfits during school assembly, hosted by Cal and Louisa. Banks had the privilege of being dismissed first by Louisa who had waited 6 years for this to occur. Ms Neilsen challenged students to table tennis and other staff braved the heat for handball. Year 12 were lucky enough to cool off with a water fight in the afternoon.
Wednesday: Trivia
The Year Advisor Team at SSHS hosted Trivia on Wednesday morning. Students were tested on their Science, Music, Movie, Pop Culture and Sport knowledge as well as how well they knew their teachers.
Thursday: Drum-line and Graduation
And a final walk through the school grounds where our wonderful students spent their last 6 years. Led by our drummers and finishing with a guard of honour.
Students and their families returned in the afternoon for the Year 12 Graduation to celebrate the accomplishments of our senior students and all who achieved this impressive milestone. We celebrated afterwards with a delicious BBQ from Meat@theBBQ, refreshing gelato, relaxing music from Bobo and Jono, silly snaps in the photo booth and the pleasant company of all those who came to congratulate our Year 12 graduates.
Friday: Picnic Day
Managing to time our travel with the rain in morning, Year 12 enjoyed a relaxing picnic to end a busy week of celebrations. A vast array of food was prepared by the students and a surprise birthday cake was enjoyed for Ms Rivett’s birthday.
Please enjoy a gallery of the events on our website as they are uploaded. We wish our Year 12 Class of 2023 all the best in their HSC exams and in their future pursuits.
Ms Rivett, Year 12 Year Advisor
Art and Culture at the MCA
Year 10 International Studies students had an inspirational day learning about the expression on culture at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) at Circular Quay.
Students had an opportunity to appreciate an expression of continuity of our Fist Nations culture as demonstrated in Vincent Namatjira’s large-scale mural P.P.F. (Past-Present-Future) (2021).
VET news
A great start to the term for the year 11 Hospitality class as they move into the year 12 course. They ran a Freshly Squeezed Juice Day working towards their assessment requirements for the topic 'Prepare and serve non-alcoholic beverages'. Students received their orders from staff and senior students then prepared and served these to their customers. A very successful day and many positive comments.
Images below of students preparing and getting ready for service.
Much excitement and valued learning experiences happening down here in J block.
