Reading Girls' School newsletter - 8 march 2024

Principal's message:

This Thursday was 'World Book Day' and it was a delight to see teachers dress up as their favourite characters from children's books. World Book Day was created by UNESCO on 23rd April 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading. World Book Day is marked in over 100 countries around the world. The aim of this day is to encourage young people to discover the pleasure of reading. Often, if students do not enjoy reading, it is because they have not found the right book to read, so it is important that we encourage young people to try different genres of books. A number of our students enjoy reading, and we regularly see many reading first thing in the morning, at break time and lunchtime. Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income. Please do encourage your child to read, and I believe that reading together provides countless opportunities for quality family time.

Ramadan

During Ramadan, the following will apply in practical PE and Dance lessons to students who are fasting; Students must have their full PE kit and will be given normal sanctions if they do not. We expect them to 'do what they can', this will depend on weather conditions, time of day and the nature of the activity. In PE activities can be adapted. Dance lessons will continue to use music as this is integral to the lesson and is part of the national curriculum.

Changes for the No 91 bus pick up on Northumberland Avenue

From Monday 15th April, the No 91 bus will only pick up students after school from the Buckland Road Circle bus stop on Northumberland Avenue.

Please make sure your daughter is aware of this – from after the Easter holidays the No 91 bus will not stop at the Canterbury Road bus stop, so all students should make their way to the Buckland Road Circle bus stop near the pedestrian exit from the school as indicated on the map below.

I wish you all a restful weekend.

Marika Farrugia, Principal

Principal's Surgery is held every Friday 8.15 – 9.00am.

World Book Day 7th March 2024

Celebration activities are a special part of World Book Day and make it an effective segment of our drive to promote Reading for Pleasure.

All pupils have been given the opportunity to take a World Book Day token, which can be exchanged for a special edition book, or used against the purchase of a full priced book in participating retailers.

On Thursday, some staff members spent the day dressed as a character from Literature. These costumes were wide ranging and inventive and certainly provoked discussion (and hopefully, a little admiration from the school community)!

  • Mr Cooke - a musketeer
  • Mr Fazio - Lady Macbeth
  • Ms Ward - Dorothy
  • Ms Pravda - the Sorting Hat
  • Ms Troy - Alice in Wonderland
  • Ms Connolly - the shark from Jaws
  • Mrs Smith - a witch from Macbeth
  • Miss Jordan - Little Red Riding Hood
  • Miss Shephard - Barnum
  • Mrs Hargrave - Maleficent

This week is National Careers Week and assembly's have taken place on this theme. Year 8s will soon be choosing their options and to help them look to the future they heard from Activate Learning (who run several local colleges) about the courses they run and the qualifications needed.

Some students will see the careers adviser individually later in the summer.

There is a webinar for parents of Year 10 students on 27 March, 6-7 pm, with Adviza, the school's careers advice service: Parent Webinar: Year 10 - Post 16 Options | Adviza
