Overview:

  • Location: University of Florida campus, Gainesville, Florida
  • Total walking time: 11 minutes

Century Tower: The Sound of Tradition

Rising above the heart of campus, Century Tower is more than just an architectural landmark—it symbolizes UF’s history, resilience, and school spirit. Built to honor students who served in World War I and II, this 157-foot structure is a tribute to the university’s past while continuing to shape its present.

If you find yourself near the tower, pause for a moment to listen. The carillon bells, played by trained UF students, create a melody that echoes across campus, illustrating the dynamic and upbeat rhythm of student life. Whether signaling a new day's start or a semester's close, these chimes connect generations of Gators. My parents, both proud UF alumni, often say, "nothing made them feel prouder to be a Gator than hearing those bells on their way to class or walking me around campus for the first time.” Now, as a student, I understand what they meant. The sound of the bells is more than just a tradition; it’s a reminder of the legacy, pride, and sense of belonging that comes with being part of the Gator Nation.

Turlington Plaza: The Pulse of Campus Life

At the core of UF’s bustling student life is Turlington Plaza, a dynamic space where campus energy is at its peak. Whether passing through on the way to class or stopping to explore, you’ll find a life-changing scene of student engagement.

From student organizations tabling and handing out flyers to musicians playing and speakers raising awareness for various causes, there’s always something happening here. Turlington Rock, covered in layers of colorful paint, serves as an evolving canvas for student creativity, announcements, and cultural expression.

Are you looking to get involved? Turlington is the place. Whether you join a club, discover volunteer opportunities, or grab a flyer for an upcoming event, this plaza connects students to the vibrant UF community. One of my friends says, “Turlington Plaza is an iconic central point at the University of Florida. It's like a melting pot for all students and every organization or club on campus.”

And here’s one of my pro tips: keep an eye out for free food! Many organizations offer donuts, coffee, and snacks to attract students. Whether you’re here to socialize, network, or soak in the atmosphere, the Gator spirit thrives in Turlington Plaza.

Marston Science Library: A Haven for Academic Success

Marston Science Library is the place for UF students who must settle in and finish work. Whether you're looking for a silent study zone or a collaborative workspace, Marston has a space that fits your needs. One of my friends says, “Are you really a UF student if you've never studied at Marston Library? Walking past those French fries and hitting the books at Marston is like a rite of passage.” The “French Fries” sculpture is a massive yellow abstract art piece outside the library. It’s a familiar student meeting spot and one of UF’s most recognizable landmarks.

Inside, you’ll find students deep in research, working on group projects, or preparing for exams. The second-floor fosters discussion and teamwork, while the top floors offer a silent area for intense concentration. Beyond books, Marston is a hub for a plethora of great resources. Need a 3D printer for a project? Looking for a private study room? Marston has it all. During finals week, the library transforms into a stress-relief zone, with occasional therapy dogs and complimentary snacks giving students a much-needed break from exam season.

Starbucks located in Marston Science Library☕

Unlike many campus buildings, Marston stays open late and has a Starbucks, making it a prime location for night owls tackling last-minute assignments. Whether you are cramming for a test or working on an important project, Marston Science Library is the ultimate academic support system.

Reitz Union: The Heart of Student Life

The Reitz Union is a central hub for student life. It is where UF’s community comes together. From club meetings and dining options to career fairs and entertainment, it is the place to unwind, connect, and engage.

Inside, you’ll find various restaurants, cozy study lounges, and event spaces that host everything from leadership conferences to social gatherings. For a fun break from academics, check out the game room and movie theater, or head to the rooftop terrace for one of the best sunset views on campus. One of my friends says, “I've done so many things at the Reitz. From business professional meetings to late-night bowling. The student union is such an integral part of campus.” This truly showcases just how much the Reitz Union has to offer.

Reitz Union is the place to start if you want to get involved. Home to UF’s student organizations, leadership programs, and career services, this space helps students explore their passions, develop skills, and build lifelong connections. Reitz offers a welcoming, relaxing environment even if you’re not attending an event. Whether grabbing a coffee, studying in the lounges, or taking in the campus's energy, there’s always something happening here.
